MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli: Partners in winning causes for India

Virat Kohli, in an interview with the BCCI website on Saturday, said he hoped Mahendra Singh Dhoni would be able to play freely after relinquishing captaincy of India's limited-overs teams.

Dhoni, India's greatest captain ever, had retired from Test cricket in December 2014 but continued to lead India in the shorter formats with reasonable success. Under him, in that tenure, India reached the semi-finals of the World Cup and World T20 and won the Asia Cup T20 but lost bilateral series against Bangladesh, South Africa and Australia. With three successive series losses and a significant dip in form, critics had started questioning Dhoni's leadership skills.

Besides, the likes of Sourav Ganguly had also stressed on the importance of Dhoni batting higher up the order. The 35-year-old batted at number six for the better part of the last decade in a bid to steer inexperienced batting line-ups and finish games for India.

However, with Kohli ready to take charge in ODIs and T20 Internationals, he said in no uncertain terms he would want Dhoni to bat higher up. In the series against New Zealand, Dhoni did walk in at number four and the results were immediately obvious. Kohli and Dhoni were involved in a 151-run partnership in Mohali as India demolished the Black Caps.

With Kohli taking charge and Dhoni sure to bat at least number four, Indian fans could be treated to many more such stands. Both men run hard, know how to find the boundary and are not shy of taking the aerial route when the need arises. In other word, it could be an exciting phase for the Indian team.
