Jeakson Singh, who created history by scoring the first ever goal for India in the FIFA U-17 World Cup, said he was on cloud nine when his header opened the hosts’ account against Colombia on Monday night.

While the Indians were delirious after Jeakson’s header that provided them their solitary goal against Colombia, the joy was short-lived as the hosts went on to lose the contest 1-2 in the Group A match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

Indian players celebrated the feat to their heart’s content, including their head coach Luis Norton de Matos, who was jumping around in sheer joy when his team opened its account. However, a defeat to Colombia follows a 0-3 loss to USA which has put India on the brink of an early exit from the competition.

“It was a nice experience and I felt on cloud nine when I scored the goal. However, we tried our best but were unlucky,” Jeakson said after the match.

“It is obviously a great feeling to score for my country in a FIFA World Cup but it would have been sweeter had we won the match. To me, in fact, it does not even matter as long as we score.”

India were able to hold Colombia for a very long time in the game, but a counterattack from the Latin American team saw Juan Penazola scoring the second goal only about a minute after Jeakson created history.

The late goal snatched the possibility of a draw away from India.

“We deserved a result, and we tried our very best to get it, but in the process, we learnt a huge lesson what international football is all about,” Jeakson said. India will now take on Ghana in their third match of the FIFA U-17 World Cup on Thursday, hoping to build on the start they have made.

India are playing this FIFA U-17 World Cup on the basis of being the hosts — a tournament which they are holding for the first time.
