Gloves raised

Afghanistan's female Olympic boxing team used to have 25 members, but as aid organisations have cut their support and non-government organisations (NGOs) have pulled out that number has now dropped to 12. But that dozen women are aiming to fight on and are hoping they will be good enough to enter into the ring at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

This member of the boxing team pauses during a training session at the sparsley furnished and poorly-lit Kabul Stadium boxing club.
