Sergio Aguero is expecting Lionel Messi to sign a new contract at Barcelona, rather than join him at Manchester City.

Speculation regarding the Argentine’s future continues to rage, with no extension agreed as yet to a deal due to expire in 2018.

Messi has expressed a desire to retire as a one-club man at Camp Nou, while club officials are eager to reach a compromise as soon as possible.

Man City not planning Messi move

Until a definite decision is made either way the transfer talk will linger on, with Premier League title hopefuls City one of few clubs in the world that could finance a move for the five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or.

Aguero, though, considers it to be highly unlikely that he will ever line up with international team-mate Messi at the Etihad Stadium, telling Chinese news agency Xinhua: “There isn’t a team in the world that would not want to have Messi as a player.

“But I think he is doing pretty well at Barcelona.

“So I think he will stay there until the end of his contract, because he is growing with Barcelona and has grown into one of the best players in the world.”

While Messi’s time at Barca continues to be called into question, so does that of Aguero at City.

He was said to be seeking assurances from Pep Guardiola regarding his role at the club, having been dropped to the bench at times in the 2016-17 campaign.

When Barcelona nearly sold Messi

The 29-year-old has, however, vowed to honour his contract and seen chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak rule out any chance of a summer sale being sanctioned.

He told the club’s official website: “Sergio Aguero is one of the best players in the world and we are a team that aspires to win in every competition we compete in.

“Having Sergio Aguero as part of the squad is an absolute must and it has never been in doubt.”
