The Indian cricket team announced on Wednesday that Mohammed Shami will be unavailable for selection for the fourth Test while middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane will miss the remaining part of the series against England.

The BCCI tweeted that Manish Pandey and Shardul Thakur will the replacements for the injured players. The fourth Test begins in Mumbai on Thursday.

Rahane, who was supposed to play the Mumbai Test was injured during the nets on Wednesday. He was hit on the finger that ruled him out of the Test. Pandey will replace him in the squad. This would have been Rahane’s first Test at his home ground.

“The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his (Shami) progress and a decision on his participation will be taken before the start of the fourth Test match,” a BCCI release said.

Mohammed Shami had been struggling with his knee during the third Test in Mohali and he had to prove his fitness on Wednesday. Earlier, India captain Virat Kohli had said that Shami is feeling “a bit of soreness in his knee.”

“After the Mohali Test he felt soreness in his knee, so we need to take a corrective call all on that,” Kohli said.

Kohli had said regarding Shami that this was the reason the team did not want to push him to play if the bowler was not comfortable.

“Because he has a history of knee surgery, we don’t want to push a player to an extent where we lose him for the whole season. So we will take a call, as I said, in the evening, to how much rest he needs, or he can go for tomorrow as well. There is still a bit of time for that to be decided,” he said.

Both Pandey and Shardul are currently playing Ranji Trophy matches for Karnataka and Mumbai, respectively.
