"The player had a knock in his right leg and after a test done this morning by the medical staff and in conjunction with the coaching staff of the national team, it was determined that he is out" of the team, a news release read.

Rather than returning to the Netherlands to start his recovery with his club side PSV, Guardado will stay with the national team to support his teammates and begin recouperation with the national team's medical staff.

Mexico is already playing a bit shorthanded, with Jesus "Tecatito" Corona, Marco Fabian, Giovani dos Santos, Hirving Lozano and Javier Aquino all missing because of injuries.

Guardado could be replaced in the middle of the field by Orbelin Pineda, the central midfielder who has helped Chivas to the top of Liga MX so far this campaign, with Jonathan dos Santos also expected to start in the middle amidst a quality run of form at Villarreal.
