The Gunners lost out on a spot in the Champions League for the first time in 20 years by finishing fifth in the Premier League this season.

Despite their FA Cup final triumph, many fans hoped the 2-1 win over Chelsea at Wembley would be Arsene Wenger's last game in charge as their frustration over the team's lack of progress increases.

Wenger, however, will remain in charge after signing a two-year extension at the Emirates Stadium, and will face immense pressure to boost the squad and improve on a dismal campaign.

Although fellow Gunners legend Martin Keown believes the club must sell star players Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, Adams believes the loss of the two would lead to a collapse next term and expects their rivals to strengthen even further.

"The league doesn't lie. They came fifth this year and they have to have some extra recruits in the summer to go forward," he said on talkSPORT.

"Man City, United, Tottenham are going to get stronger and there’s teams that have gone past them. If they lose Ozil and Sanchez they could be mid-table. I don’t see them improving, the cup games are very different because you can do it in a one off. Portsmouth did it in 2008.

"Over the course of the season they have been found wanting and will that improve next season? I’m not sure, I don’t think it will."
