Ashwin-Jadeja emerge as India's deadliest spin duo

Spin bowling even more than batting in Tests is a game of partnerships. In Ashwin and Jadeja, Team India may have found its deadliest spin bowling combination. In just 22 innings bowling together, the duo has the best average per wickets claimed amongst all our spin legends and also the best strike rate in Indian Test history. The duo have a long way to go yet, but surely they have the potential to deliver for years to come.

Ashwin-Jadeja have bagged 136 wickets while bowling together and are a long way short of the 501 wickets claimed by our most successful pair of Kumble and Bhajji. However while Kumble-Bhajji combo claimed a wicket every 11th over, Ashwin and Jadeja send an opposition batsman home in under 8 overs. The current Indian duo also concede only 18 runs per wicket as compared to Kumble and Bhajji who conceded over 30 runs per wicket.

Jadeja got the man-of-the-match award in Kanpur, but his 5-for in the 1st innings came after much struggle as India had failed to break the Williamson-Latham partnership on Day 2. "Whenever we don't get regular wickets, we talk a lot. When Latham and Williamson were batting so well in the first innings, Ashwin and I talked in the break and we discussed what lines to bowl and what angles to use. We discussed whether we should bowl wider of the crease and where exactly to pitch", explained Jadeja after the match.

Ashwin-Jadeja stormed back on Day-3 and claimed 9-wickets between them in the 1st innings and seven in the second innings. Ashwin has credited coach Kumble for the turnaround. "My partnership with Kumble is a match made in heaven. He comes down and gives me more options that I can actually execute, so that is something I am really enjoying. The communication channel is pretty clear. We don't feed a lot of information to Jaddu before a Test. Whatever Anil has to say to him, he tells me, I pass that information on to him in the field", said Ashwin.

Jadeja who claimed a 5-for in the 1st innings played his role to perfection in the 2nd innings. He kept things tight from his end, not conceding any runs in 17 of his 34 overs. "The ball wasn't turning from the stump line in the first innings, so we were trying to mix the pace. Obviously Ashwin is a very good bowler on slow turning wickets and I would like to congratulate him for 200 wickets. I enjoy bowling with him", said Jadeja.

The duo will get an opportunity to bowl a lot together with India playing 12 more Tests this season.
