Iago Aspas is hoping to give Liverpool fans a better memory of him by knocking Manchester United out of the Europa League.

The Celta Vigo star endured a difficult time during his spell at Anfield, featuring just 14 times over the course of two seasons, and he is infamous for a corner kick he took against Chelsea as the Reds missed out on Premier League glory in 2013-14.

Despite a disappointing tenure in England, the Spaniard is now looking to polish over his mistake, by sending Liverpool's rivals Man United out of the Europa League, thus denying them automatic qualification to the Champions League.

Celta are a goal down from the first leg, but Aspas’ teammates have not given up on reaching the final in Stockholm when they travel to Old Trafford on Thursday night.

And, after struggling to impress Liverpool supporters in his time at the club, the 29-year-old has set his sights on leaving a lasting impression.

“I suppose it’s because it was my last game and we lost,” Aspas is quoted as saying in the Guardian.

"It was a great season for Liverpool – one of their best – although I would have liked to have played a bigger part and that corner is the final memory, so it’s their lasting image of me."

He continued: "But in football you can’t forever live in the past. Things keep moving, every day gives you another chance.

"Hopefully, for the sake of Celta and because of the happiness it would bring Liverpool fans, we can knock out United and they can have a new image to replace it."

Celta lock horns with Jose Mourinho's side at Old Trafford on Thursday, with the game kicking off at 20:05 UK time.
