Victoria Azarenka claimed a hard-fought victory over Angelique Kerber to reach the fourth round at the US Open.

The two-time runner-up is rediscovering her best form after overcoming a persistent foot injury and she came through her toughest test at the New York tournament, sealing a 7-5 2-6 6-4 win over 11th seed Kerber.

Azarenka battled back from 5-2 down to take the opening set, but Kerber seized command of the second set and quickly levelled the contest.

In the final set the more aggressive approach of Azarenka eventually ground down Kerber's defences and the 20th seed clinched victory after two hours and 52 minutes.

The Belarusian, considered one of the biggest threats to reigning champion Serena Williams, faces Vavara Lepchenko in the last 16.

Lepchenko staged a fine comeback against Mona Barthel to win her third-round match 1-6 6-3 6-4.

Meanwhile, former champion Sam Stosur marched on by defeating Sara Errani in a see-saw affair.

The 2011 champion, who was the last player to beat Williams at the US Open, prevailed 7-5 2-6 6-1 and will next meet Flavia Pennetta after the Italian beat Petra Cetkovska 1-6 6-1 6-4.
