Despite the strong start to the 2017 Dubai Cup following Monday's draw against China U-23, Malaysia U-22 lost their heads against Thailand U-23 to succumbed to a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of our neighbours.

Frank Bernhardt retained almost the same starting XI as the one that drew against China but included Johor Darul Ta'zim's Safawi Rasid for this encounter against the Thais.

An early bath for goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan in the 31st minute put Malaysia on the back foot before midway point of the match. His tug back on a Thai player resulted in a straight red and worse still, Thailand scored from the ensuing spot kick.

Holding out with 10 men is a tough enough job but Safawi went on to make it an even more difficult job just before half time. He was dismissed just four minute before the break for a heavy challenge, leaving Bernhardt with a tough task of organising his nine men.

The floodgates opened in the second half when Sasalak, Phitiwat and Thanasit scored in the second half of the match to deepen the wound on Malaysia. Thailand even missed a penalty that could have make the scoreline even bigger. To make matters worse, Khairil Anuar also got himself sent off to leave his eight team mates battling it out for the remainder of the match.
