12:55 PM - THE PLAYERS ARE WALKING OFF THE FIELD. UMPIRES CALL FOR POOR LIGHT.

Groans can be heard all over the ground as the umpires take a light reading and remove the bails. Virat Kohli even seems to be shaking his head, but that will be another interruption to today's play.

12:53 PM - AUS 7-517 (Johnson 0*, Smith 162*)

Johnson is unable to get Karn Sharma away in the remaining balls of the over.

12:51 PM - OUT! CLARKE IS GONE FOR 128. AUS 7-517 (Smith 162*)

And so a great innings comes to an end. Clarke looks to hit Karn Sharma hard towards midwicket, but it goes more square and is well held by Chuteshwar Pujara. A big, deserved round of applause echoes around Adelaide Oval for Clarke as he departs.

That partnership produced 163 runs for Australia. Mitchell Johnson is the new man in as Australia continues with its innings.

12:50 PM - AUS 6-517 (Clarke 128*, Smith 162*)

DROPPED! Smith looks to slog sweep Karn Sharma, but it's grassed by Ishant Sharma at backward square leg! He picks up one run.

12:48 PM - AUS 6-516 (Clarke 128*, Smith 161*)

Smith tries to smash Ishant Sharma out the ground but his heaving attempt at a pull-shot sees him bottom-edge onto his pad and away from his stumps.

Smith improves the next ball, pulling the bowler past the infield to deep mid-wicket. There's cover there and the batsmen come back for two.

Smith is moving his feet, which sees Ishant Sharma respond with a leg-side delivery. It's very wide and well caught by the keeper, but no wide is given.

A short ball follows and Smith hooks it to square leg for one run.

FOUR RUNS! A stand-and-deliver pull shot from Michael Clarke, who smashes it between long-on and mid-wicket. Lovely.

12:44 PM - AUS 6-509 (Clarke 124*, Smith 158*)

FOUR! Big heaving on-drive from Clarke to punish Karn Sharma as the ball bounds away to deep mid-wicket.

Clarke gets a single the next ball to bring up another milestone - the 150 partnership between the two batsman.

Now a reverse sweep from Steve Smith! He gets two for it.

12:40 PM - AUS 6-495 (Clarke 118*, Smith 155*)

Ishant Sharma has been given the ball.

Smith is onto him immediately! A big swing of the bat as the batsman pulls the paceman to deep mid-wicket ... but it's kept to just one run by some sharp work on the boundary by Karn Sharma. Good work.

In the air ... and DROPPED! Clarke spoons up a gimme of a chance, but Ajinkya Rahane coming around from mid-on can't take the diving catch. More frustration for the bowlers!

Clarke works a shorter ball to square leg for a single.

FOUR WIDES! Horribly loose ball from Sharma which races away to fine leg.

"This has just degenerated into a rabble. The fielding and the bowling, I have to say, is just pathetic," quips Drew Morphett. That brings the 500 up for Australia.

12:37 PM - AUS 6-490 (Clarke 115*, Smith 153*)

DROPPED! Smith gives himself room in an effort slog it over cover, but edges it and sees Virat Kohli drop him at slip! To rub salt in the wound, the batsmen pick up three runs!

Clarke sweeps to fine leg for two runs, before picking up a single to square leg. Smith ends the over with one run to point.

12:34 PM - 150 FOR SMITH! 21x4s, 0x6s, 218 BALLS. AUS 6-487 (Clarke 115*)

Smith plays another shot behind square leg and picks up the single to bring up another batting milestone. He's overtaken the game's previous highest scorer (David Warner, 145). He's showing plenty of aggression late on with a declaration looking likely.

12:31 PM - AUS 6-486 (Clarke 115*, Smith 149*)

Clarke guides Shami to backward point with a defensive prod for one run.

Smith cuts a shorter ball to the sweeper at point for one run.

Short again from Shami and Clarke fends it off his hip for a single to fine leg.

12:29 PM - AUS 6-483 (Clarke 113*, Smith 148*)

Clarke looks to swipe Karn Sharma away, but he mistimes the shot. He'll still get one for it as it trickles behind square leg.

DROP CATCH? Smith sweeps hard and low, but it's still airborne and it's been dropped at square leg! It was a difficult chance, but Chuteshwar Pujara - a usually very reliable fielder - has grassed a potentially crucial wicket.

WHOOPS! Now Smith attempts an ill-advised reverse sweep, and nearly gets bowled for it! The ball bounces off the keeper's pads. No run as Smith lives dangerously.

12:22 PM - AUS 6-480 (Clarke 111*, Smith 147*)

Mohammed Shami to Smith. The paceman strays down the leg side and Smith glances it to fine leg. Good running between the wickets sees him pick up two more.

12:20 PM - AUS 6-478 (Clarke 111*, Smith 145*)

Steve Smith is on strike, he's facing Karn Sharma.

Smith whips the bowler towards square leg for an easy single. Clarke follows suit with a single himself, before Smith hits a hard sweep shot to the square leg boundary for another run.

Clarke drives into the gap at cover for one more run. Smith sweeps again to square leg for another single - five in the over.

12:17 PM - The players are back out in the middle! No declaration from Australia just yet, the two centurions are taking guard once more with India in the field.

12:13 PM - Now, the next big question for today: Will Clarke declare now to get India's batsmen in and facing the fury of Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris?

11:02 AM - THE PLAYERS ARE HEADING OFF THE PITCH. IT'S ANOTHER RAIN INTERRUPTION.

I find rain interruptions as annoying as sentences written in all caps. Michael Clarke (109*) and Steve Smith (142*) walk off the ground to huge applause, and the covers are being rushed back on to the ground.

But is it justified? The rain doesn't look as heavy as before, and the batsmen were definitely hesitant to come off. The umpires are still patrolling the ground. Updates to follow.

11:00 AM - AUS 6-473 (Clarke 109*, Smith 142*)

Mohammed Shami is back into the attack for India. The umpires have briefly conferred about the light levels. Hopefully that's not another interruption waiting in the wings.

FOUR! Classy! Not much footwork from Smith but he shows tremendous control to guide the ball through the gap at gully for a boundary that shows off his repertoire.

FOUR MORE! Smith gets forward and HAMMERS a big cover drive through the vacant offside area and gets another boundary to take him to a new best score in Test cricket.

Smith gets a single to put Clarke on strike.

FOUR! Clarke takes a step back, swings his bat a wider ball down the offside, and it races through the gap at gulley for another boundary!

10:54 AM - AUS 6-459 (Clarke 105*, Smith 132*)

Karn Sharma to Smith and ... STUMPING CHANCE MISSED! Smith, perhaps overly juiced up from his recent rampages, has charged down the wicket, missed a big swing at the ball, but Wriddhiman Saha has spilt the ball, and missed the chance to stump Smith two metres out of the crease.

Smith cools things down with a single, before Clarke hits the bowler to long off for another run.

Smith hits an assertive drive through the covers and he will pick up two for it as the sweeper gives chase.

CHANCE, AND FOUR! Smith looks to power the ball past the bowler with a slap shot, and it flashes past a startled Aaron and races away to the long-on boundary. If Aaron were Neo from The Matrix, that might have been a caught-and-bowled chance.

Clarke immediately rotates the strike in the new over, working a Karn Sharma full-toss to long-on for one run. Smith and Clarke exchange another pair of singles.

The next ball is edged, but it falls safely in front of the man at slip.

10:17 AM - Play is set to resume at 3:30pm Adelaide time.

9:25 AM - A reminder that, while there's no end in sight to the current rain delay, play can go through to 7:00pm Adelaide time today.

8:59 AM - The ground staff are taking planks off the covers, but the radar still says more rain is incoming, possibly even heavier than what we've had so far today. At the moment, there's no word on when the players will be back out in the middle.

8:37 AM - Another rain delay. Can you believe it? First we have to wait an insufferable amount of time for Smith to reach his century and now ... whoops. Better not say anything more. #Ibelieveinjinxes #touchwood

8:29 AM - A CENTURY FOR SMITH! 14x4s, 0x6s, 172 BALLS. AUS 6-407 (Clarke 85*)

First ball of the resumed session, and Smith just guides this through mid-wicket for two runs! A terrific knock from Mr Reliable in the middle-order. That's his fifth Test century, and he gets a very warm round of applause. He gets a fist-bump, then a hug from his captain.

8:24 AM - Looks like the covers are off again. Hopefully the game will be back underway in about five minutes.

8:00 AM - Hold the phone - the hesham covers are back out on the pitch, and the Indian players are heading off the pitch along with the umpires. This is frustrating.

7:59 AM - We're just a few minutes away from the resumption of play for the second session. There's still a fair bit of gloom about Adelaide with a thick band of overcast clouds hovering above, but the umpires are out there and the Indian players are in a huddle, psyching themselves up.

7:16 AM - LUNCH CALLED EARLY: AUSTRALIA 6-405 (Clarke 85*, Smith 98*)

Smith raced away to 98 not out before the rain called an early end to the first session. He will come back out hoping for a fifth Test century as his stock in the Test team continues to grow at a rapid pace. The covers are off and play is set to resume at 1:30pm AEDT, weather permitting.

6:40 AM - RAIN DELAY. AUSTRALIA 6-405 (Clarke 85*, Smith 98*)

There's some "nuisance rain", as Jim Maxwell calls it, falling in Adelaide at the moment, and the players are jogging off as the groundsmen rush on with some hesham covers. Hopefully it's not too long a delay.

Sympathies are with Steve Smith too, who looked all set for a fifth Test century.

Varun Aaron is bowling his first over of the day. "He's slippery," says Grandstand's Jim Maxwell.

Aaron hits Smith on the pads, but there's no serious appeal for LBW as it was drifting too far down the leg side. A missed opportunity for Smith, who was looking to glance it away.

Ishant Shama pitches it short to Smith, who gets a single off a back-foot defensive shot towards cover.

5:57 AM - AUS 6-381 (Clarke 73*, Smith 86*)

Mohammed Shami will complete his over to start off day two. Clarke to face.

PLAY AND A MISS: Shami gets a great ball to seam away from the right hander, and Clarke has a nibble. His attempted cover drive narrowly misses the edge.

End of the over. A wicket-maiden for Shami after claiming Brad Haddin's wicket on the last ball of day one.

5:39 AM - Michael Clarke is resuming his innings. Is it courageous? Is it silly? Either way, captain Michael Clarke has opted to resume his innings on 60 alongside Steve Smith, who is unbeaten on 72. If this match needed any more narrative, it just got some delivered in spades.

We're just a few moments away from the resumption of play. Enjoy!
