12:20 PMTHAT'S STUMPS. IND 1-71 (Sharma 40*, Rahul 31*) - trail by 501 runs

Rohit Sharma (40*) and Lokesh Rahul (31*) have done a good job knuckling down after Mitchell Starc got the early breakthrough with the wicket of Murali Vijay (0) in the first over of the innings.

Sharma looks strong as he nears a half-century, while Rahul has settled into a nice rhythm after a less than stellar start.

Ryan Harris was clearly struggling at the end of the day and Australia will hope he can rest up tonight because, if the first two days are anything to go by the pitch isn't offering too much to bowlers.

Every bowler had their moments in the final session of the day but today belonged to the batsmen.

Australia's domination continued with Steve Smith reaching his fourth century of the series, Shane Watson (81) falling just 19 runs short off 100, Shaun Marsh (73) adding a second-straight 50 and Joe Burns (58) notching his first Test milestone.

Hopefully the wicket starts to break up a bit on day three and Australia's bowlers can back up the good platform laid by the batsmen.

12:12 PMIND 1-71 (Sharma 40, Rahul 31) - trails by 501

Starc will bowl the last over of the day.

Sharma gets a quick single as Ryano tracks it down and throws well of target from mid-wicket. There was a second run on offer on the overthrow but it wasn't taken. Joe Burns did well backing up to stop four.

Great bouncer from Starc to back that up. He has Rahul jumping and Steve Smith puts a short leg in place.

Starc sends one down leg side and Rahul has a swing at it. No edge, although the crowd thought there was.

Rahul pushes down the ground and they get two as Warner tracks it down.

Rahul defends the last ball from Starc.

12:07 PMIND 1-68 (Sharma 39, Rahul 29) - trails by 504

Lyon continues to Rahul from around the wicket. A regulation and leg slip in place with short leg and silly mid-off as well as two catching mid-wickets.

Now Lyon comes back over the wicket after Rahul comfortably defends his first five bals. This is a better line.

Rahul turns the final ball off his hip but there's no run on offer.

12:03 PMIND 1-68 (Sharma 39, Rahul 29) - trails by 504

Mitchell Starc replaces Harris.

Rahul gets a single with a push to cover.

FOUR! Sharma fends away a short ball and it flies wide of Haddin for four runs down the leg side.

Play and miss. Starc sends one across and away from Sharma as he looks to defend.

12:00 PMIND 1-63 (Sharma 35, Rahul 28) - trails by 509

SHOUT! Not out. Lyon hits Sharma on the pads as he looks to sweep and the Aussies go up in chorus. Replays show an inside edge. Good call.

Sharma made a real mess of that. Not only did he mis-time his sweep, he twisted himself around and ended up on his backside.

He gets off strike with a single to the leg side.

And Rahul slaps Lyon through cover for three to end the over.

11:52 AMIND 1-59 (Sharma 34, Rahul 25) - trails by 513

Harris sends another one past the outside edge of Sharma to start his seventh over.

Sharma follows up with a couple of leaves and a solid defensive stroke.

He gets off strike with a single to mid-on and Harris doubles over after the delivery. I'd say this will be his last over.

FOUR! Rahul drives though cover and it rockets to the boundary.

11:50 AMIND 1-59 (Sharma 34, Rahul 25) - trails by 513

Harris sends another one past the outside edge of Sharma to start his seventh over.

Sharma follows up with a couple of leaves and a solid defensive stroke.

He gets off strike with a single to mid-on and Harris doubles over after the delivery. I'd say this will be his last over.

FOUR! Rahul drives though cover and it rockets to the boundary.

11:48 AMIND 1-54 (Sharma 33, Rahul 21) - trails by 518

Sharma whips a single through mid-on and Lyon slaps the ground after coming up short with his diving effort.

Lyon gets one to bounce a bit more and Rahul struggles to keep it down as he looks to work off his hip.

One from the over.

11:45 AMIND 1-53 (Sharma 32, Rahul 21) - trails by 519

Harris bowls to Sharma and it's pushed almost to the boundary but Warner's quick enough to track it down and keep it to three.

Rahul pokes one to cover and Warner zooms in. He looks to throw down the stumps but misses. Sharma was home anyway but it's good to see Australia maintaining pressure in the field.

Sharma plays and misses outside off and follows it up with a single through mid-wicket.

11:42 AMIND 1-48 (Sharma 28, Rahul 20) - trails by 524

Rahul looks to turn off his hip and gets a bit edgy to Lyon.

Now he successfully turns three runs behind square.

Sharma gets himself a single, whipping to mid-on and that's the over bowled.

11:39 AMIND 1-44 (Sharma 27, Rahul 17) - trails by 528

Ryan Harris replaces Hazlewood.

Rahul looks to drive a half-volley through cover to start but Warner cuts it off.

Harris angles in to leg stump and it's whipped just wide of mid-on. Starc does well to cut it off and keep it to one run.

Sharma prods at a defensive stroke and it just jags away a touch and Sharma can't touch it.

Sharma leaves the last ball of the over.

11:36 AMIND 1-43 (Sharma 27, Rahul 16) - trails by 529

Lyon continues to Sharma.

He tries to whip Lyon through the leg side but it's mis-timed and lobs up just over the catching men. That'll be encouraging.

Rahul turns one off his hip for a single and Sharma defends the end of the over.

11:30 AMIND 1-41 (Sharma 26, Rahul 15) - trails by 531

FOUR! Hazlewood bangs one in short and Rahul plays a nice pull shot that races to the square leg boundary.

Rahul picks up two more as he whips off the stumps and it goes wide of Harris at mid-on.

He gets back into defensive mode to end the over and that's drinks.

11:26 AMIND 1-35 (Sharma 26, Rahul 9) - trails by 537

Rahul looks to defend Lyon's first ball but gets an inside edge on to his pad. Short leg picks it up on the bounce but if Lyon get that to rear up every now and then that will be a catching chance.

Rahul dances around his crease and gives himself enough room to cut for a single.

BOOM!! Sharma charges again and hammers Lyon over the leg side for six more runs. That went about 10-15 rows back.

11:22 AMIND 1-28 (Sharma 20, Rahul 8) - trails by 544

Sharma turns one more run off his hip, giving Rahul a look at Hazlewood.

Rahul defends to cover but it sneaks past and they get a quick single.

Sharma sees out the rest of the over defensively.

In pictures: Sydney Test, Day 2

11:19 AMIND 1-26 (Sharma 19, Rahul 7) - trails by 546

Lyon continues to Rahul, who's first defensive stroke is a bit edgy.

A silly mid-off and short leg are both in place now and Rahul turns a single past the catcher on the leg side.

Sharma ends the over and retains the strike with a single to mid-off.

11:15 AMIND 1-24 (Sharma 18, Rahul 6) - trails by 548

Hazlewood's first ball is left alone by Sharma but that was very close to off stump.

The next delivery is inside-edged and the ball ends up caught in the top of his pad.

Sharma lets another one go just wide of off stump. He is either incredibly confident in where off stump is or he has no idea how close these are.

Sharma tries to work Hazlewood's last ball off his hip but just edges into his body. Nor run. Good maiden by Hazlewood.

11:11 AMIND 1-24 (Sharma 18, Rahul 6) - trails by 548

Nathan Lyon will replace Ryan Harris at the Randwick End.

Sharma gets a good stride in and defends Lyon's first ball.

SIX!! Sharma dances down the pitch and hammers it back over the sight screen for a maximum.

Lyon finds the inside edge as Sharma looks to defend the next delivery. It dribbled away behind square but Rahul doesn't want to run to the danger end.

Sharma picks up a single to mid-on and Rahul defends the final two balls of the over.

11:07 AMIND 1-17 (Sharma 11, Rahul 6) - trails by 555

Josh Hazlewood replaces Starc and lands his first ball right on a good line and length as we enter the final hour of today's play.

Rahul just leans on one and it shoots fine of mid-off. Warner puts in the hard yards and tracks it down, keeping it to two runs.

Rahul defends the rest of the over very well. He's looking far more compact and solid after a pretty questionable start.

11:02 AMIND 1-15 (Sharma 11, Rahul 4) - trails by 557

Harris continues and Sharma can't get him away.

Harris is bowling very good line and length and Sharma is being tied down nicely. Another maiden.

11:00 AMIND 1-15 (Sharma 11, Rahul 4) - trails by 557

Starc bangs one in very short and Rahul fends it away. That hit him high on the handle and went behind square but landed safely. That could have gone anywhere. he had no idea what to do with that ball.

There's a short leg, square leg and leg gully in place for Rahul and Starc is continuing to bowl short.

The last bowl of the over is short but on the wrong line and Rahul watches it sail past outside leg.

Starc has a few words to him at the end of his maiden.

10:54 AMIND 1-15 (Sharma 11, Rahul 4) - trails by 557

Harris continues and Rahul takes a quick single as Burns can't quite handle the quick pick-up at short cover.

Sharma leaves a few as Harris bangs away at that line outside off.

10:51 AMIND 1-14 (Sharma 11, Rahul 3) - trails by 558

Starc continues to Sharma who's defending his first few deliveries.

FOUR! Starc goes short again and Sharma hits off his hip and Ryan Harris can't get around from fine leg in time to cut it off.

10:47 AMIND 1-10 (Sharma 7, Rahul 3) - trails by 562

Sharma gets one more as he prods Harris to cover and gets a single as Warner again pulls off some sharp fielding.

Rahul picks up two runs with a well-directed cover drive and defends the last ball of the over with a solid stride down the pitch.

10:43 AMIND 1-7 (Sharma 6, Rahul 1) - trails by 565

RUN-OUT CHANCE!! Sharma pushes to cover and immediately takes off but Rahul stands still. Warner's diving throw just misses the stumps. That would have been close.

Replays show he was safe anyway but this is a very nervous start.

FOUR! Starc pitches short but it's right in the slot for Sharma and he hammers a pull shot to the boundary just in front of square.

Sharma pushes to mid-off but a great diving save by David Warner keeps it to one.

In pictures: Sydney Test, Day 2

10:40 AMIND 1-2 (Sharma 1, Rahul 1) - trails by 570

Ryan Harris will bowl from the Randwick End.

BEATEN. Rahul pushes at one on a good line and misses it. That can't have been far from the outside edge. Pretty poor start.

He gets off strike with a single off his thigh to mid-wicket.

Sharma guides one to gully and Lyon pulls off a nice diving save. He has a shy at the stumps from his knees but it flies past and they run an overthrow.

There's not too much wrong with that. If he'd hit Sharma was probably gone as he tried to make his ground.

Rahul pushes at a few wide ones and again misses everything.

10:34 AMIND 1-0 (Sharma 0, Rahul 0) - trails by 572

Sharma defends his first three balls.

That's a wicket-maiden to Starc.

Who needs Mitchell Johnson?

10:33 AMVIJAY'S GONE FOR 0!! c Haddin b Starc. IND 1-0 (Rahul 0*)

Vijay slashes at a ball well outside off and nicks through to Haddin who takes a comfortable catch. Vijay should have been leaving that. He'll be furious with himself.

What a start! Starc screams in Vijay's face as he runs past. Not exactly classy.

Rohit Sharma is in next.

10:30 AMIND 0-0 (Vijay 0, Rahul 0) - trails by 572

Vijay leaves the first ball alone outside off.

The next ball is angled across and Vijay reaches for it, pushing to point for another dot.

10:20 AMSMITH DECLARES. Australia 7-572 (Haddin 9*)

He obviously just wanted a few overs of unapologetic slogging to boost that already impressive total, but he's called them in and India will have a couple of hours to bat this afternoon.

Congratulations to Mohammed Shami on his five-wicket haul. He was comfortably the best of India's quicks, going for under four runs an over to finish with 5-112.

The rest of India's bowlers were less impressive:

Ashwin: 1-142 off 47 overs

Yadav: 1-137 off 27 overs

Kumar: 0-122 off 34 overs

Raina: 0-53 off 16 overs

10:18 AMHARRIS IS GONE FOR 25!! c Ashwin b Shami

He tries one too many slogs and he's caught at backward square. Shami has a five-wicket haul.

That was a very entertaining nine-ball innings by the big hitter.

10:16 AMAUS 6-572 (Harris 25, Haddin 9)

KABOOM! Harris goes again, this time almost straight back into Shami. That rocketed to the straight boundary.

He slaps one over cover again and it's cut off by Rahul for two runs.

Shami bounces him and it's called a wide.

10:13 AMAUS 6-565 (Harris 19, Haddin 9)

FOUR! Harris belts a boundary over cover.

AND ANOTHER!! Kumar gets hit for another boundary, this time through cover.

Now he goes leg side and picks up to as fine leg comes around to cut off the skied pull.

FOUR MORE!! What's happening Harris has gone over cover for another four. That's the best yet. One bounce.

AND AGAIN!! He's bettered that with a heave over the leg side that bounces over for four more runs.

He slashes through point and the man on the boundary cuts it off. A single and Harris keeps the strike.

10:10 AMAUS 6-546 (Harris 0, Haddin 9)

Haddin ducks under a bouncer from Shami and sees out the rest of the over for no runs.

10:09 AMBURNS IS GONE FOR 58!! c Rahul b Shami. AUS 6-546 (Haddin 9*)

Shami snares his fourth wicket as Burns tries to play a similar shot but can't get it over the mid-on who had been pushed back for just that reason.

Well done to Joe Burns on a strong half-century and well done to Lokesh Rahul for finally holding on to a catch.

Ryan Harris is out in the middle. Interesting decision to push him up the order ahead of Starc.

In pictures: Sydney Test, Day 2

10:05 AMAUS 5-546 (Burns 58, Haddin 9)

Shami comes in to bowl to Burns.

FOUR! Burns just stands and delivers, hammering four more runs over mid-on.

10:02 AMAUS 5-542 (Burns 54, Haddin 9)

Kumar resumes. Haddin walks at him and picks up a single to cover. That's 100 runs off Kumar's bowling.

Burns gets out of his crease as well and gets one to mid-on. Both batsmen are taking advantage of how slowly Kumar is bowling.

Haddin bunts to mid-off and takes a very quick single.

Another easy single for Burns just wide of mid-on. Making it look very simple at the moment.

9:40 AMTHAT'S TEA! AUS 5-538 (Burns 52*, Haddin 7*)

What can you say other than asking: When will Australia put India's bowlers out of their misery?

Shaun Marsh (73) and Joe Burns (52*) built on the platform laid by the four batsmen to have come before them and now Australia is in an almost untouchable position.

Congratulations to Burns on reaching his maiden Test 50 and well done Marsh for totting up his second in a row.

A declaration shouldn't be too far away, whether it's during tea or during the final session.

For India, Mohammed Shami is still their best seamer, while Ravi Ashwin has been tight all innings and given Burns some trouble with those carom balls of his.

INDIA bowling

Shami: 3-101 off 27 overs

Ashwin: 1-142 off 47 overs

Yadav: 1-137 off 27 overs

Kumar: 0-99 off 32 overs

Raina: 0-53 off 16 overs

9:38 AMAUS 5-538 (Burns 52, Haddin 7)

Shami bounces Burns and he plays a well-controlled pull shot. He's brought that down from almost above his head for a single.

Haddin gets a single with a strange lofted square cut that floats wide of point. There was two on offer there but Haddin didn't want it. That ball was incredibly slow an Haddin really had to wait for it.

Burns pushes the last ball of the over to point.

9:35 AMAUS 5-536 (Burns 51, Haddin 6)

Burns gets down the wicket to Ashwin and works off his pads. It goes to short leg but straight into the ground first.

Burns works a single off his hip and Haddin defends the end of the over.

9:34 AMAUS 5-535 (Burns 50, Haddin 6)

SIX!!! Shami pitches up to Haddin and the keeper absolutely belts him over his head for a six off his first ball.

Virat Kohli was having a bit to say as he marked his guard and that is the perfect response by the veteran.

9:31 AMMARSH IS GONE FOR 73!! c Saha b Shami. AUS 5-529 (Burns 50*)

Shami gets the breakthrough.

As expected, Marsh tries to cut a ball that isn't exactly there to be cut and it's taken by a diving Saha.

Marsh has been trying that shot all day and getting bottom edges into the ground but this goes a little bit worse.

Brad Haddin is bounding down the stairs to join Joe Burns out in the middle.

9:29 AMAUS 4-529 (Burns 50, Marsh 73)

FOUR! Mohammed Shami pitches up and Marsh coolly whips it from outside off, wide of mid-on and to the boundary. That rocketed through the on side. Great shot.

9:27 AMAUS 4-525 (Burns 50, Marsh 69)

Burns defends the rest of Ashwin's over.

9:25 AMFIFTY FOR BURNS!! 94 balls (9 x 4s). AUS 4-525 (Marsh 69*)

There's Joe Burns's first Test half-century in just his second Test. He brings it up with his ninth four.

He started a bit nervously but has come out of the lunch break and batted aggressively to reach 50. Congratulations.

In pictures: Sydney Test, Day 2

9:21 AMAUS 4-521 (Burns 46, Marsh 69)

Yadav bowls to Burns, who pulls for single in front of square and that's another 100-run partnership for Australia. Good effort by Burns to get that to ground quickly and safely.

Marsh bumps one to mid-wicket and it's slowed down with a dive but Marsh gets back for a second on the throw.

Yadav tries to bounce Marsh, who attempts a pull shot but it's slightly mis-timed.

BOOF! Marsh belts a wider Yadav delivery through point for four more with a powerful slash.

9:16 AMAUS 4-514 (Burns 45, Marsh 63)

Here comes Ravi Ashwin, replacing Kumar.

He starts over the wicket to Marsh, who works a single off leg stump.

Burns pushes to cover who bats it away. There might have been a single on offer but, after a mix-up they call it off.

BOOM!! Burns dances down and tonks the ball straight back over Ashwin and it bounces over the rope for four.

Burns tries to sweep the next ball but he gets a top edge and it bounces to deep fine leg for a single. Ashwin wasn't happy with the fielding effort there but it would have taken a freakish effort to catch that.

9:11 AMAUS 4-508 (Burns 40, Marsh 62)

Yadav will bowl his 26th over. I would have thought some it's time for spin to be re-injected into the attack.

Marsh works a single off his hip.

THAT'S 500 UP FOR AUSTRALIA. That is the fourth time in as many attempts that Australia has passed 500 in the first innings this series.

FOUR! Yadav angles one in to Burns and he just opens the face and guides it to the third-man boundary.

AND AGAIN!! Burns cracks a pull shot straight past mid-wicket and all the way to the boundary. That will help his confidence to no end.

9:03 AMAUS 4-490 (Burns 31, Marsh 53)

Yadav continues to Burns who is defending again. The last few overs from Kumar and Yadav have really slowed the run rate down.

Yadav bangs one in short and Burns pulls hard to the man in the deep for a single. Nice shot. He doesn't look weighed down by long periods without runs.

Marsh hammers a powerful off drive but it's stopped very well at mid-off and it and he sneaks through for a single.

9:00 AMAUS 4-488 (Burns 30, Marsh 52)

Kumar continues and Marsh is still trying to hit back past him.

He follows up a few stopped straight drives with a a whip off his thigh that's stopped at mid-wicket. Another maiden.

8:55 AMAUS 4-488 (Burns 30, Marsh 52)

Umesh Yadav back into the attack.

Burns is defending well.

He looks to go back down the ground and Yadav scoops it up and looks to throw back at the stumps as Burns steps back into his ground.

More of the same on the next delivery but there really isn't a lot going on with either of these bowlers. Burns and Marsh look to be doing it pretty easy out there.

That being said, there's a maiden for Yadav.

8:50 AMAUS 4-488 (Burns 30, Marsh 52)

Kumar will continue after Kohli gave a lengthy speech during drinks.

Straight away, Marsh pulls out that awkward cut shot to a pretty full ball. He plays in twice and both times it goes straight to point for a dot ball.

Marsh tries to go big over Kumar's head but gets an outside edge and it sails high into the air. It lands safely on the off side and he picks up two more.

Marsh looks to take Kumar down the ground a couple of times but neither come off. The second effort cannons into the stumps to end the over.

Umpire Dharmasena asks Kumar if he got a hand to it. Kumar says no but I think Burns would have been safe regardless.

8:43 AMFIFTY FOR MARSH!! 87 balls (6 x 4s, 1 x 6). AUS 4-486 (Burns 30*)

He brings up his second consecutive half-century with a casual off drive to end the over. This innings hasn't been without nervous moments but he's been pretty solid for his 50.

His past two innings will go a long way to cementing his spot in this Test team.

Australia is pushing towards 500 and a declaration may be coming some time this session. But I don't think Steve Smith would rob Joe Burns a chance at his maiden Test half-century.

8:40 AM - AUS 4-485 (Burns 30, Marsh 49)

Raina has a bit of a conference with Kohli as he gets set to start his 16th over.

Marsh leaves the first ball alone well outside off.

The next ball is defended to point and Marsh looks to take off for a quick single but it wasn't ever on.

He follows up with a couple of very, very edgy defensive strokes.

Wisely, Kohli puts a silly mid-off in place and now Marsh defends to mid-on.

8:37 AM - AUS 4-485 (Burns 30, Marsh 49)

Marsh starts Kumar's next over cutting gently for a single to point to move within one run of a second consecutive 50.

Kumar continues, bowling a better line and length to Burns, but there's no movement. He's just floating it up there and Burns defends comfortably.

It really looks like Kumar is struggling with that leg injury. He's not offering much.

In pictures: Sydney Test, Day 2

8:34 AM - AUS 4-484 (Burns 30, Marsh 48)

Suresh Raina replaces Ashwin and Burns watchfully defends the entire over.

8:31 AM - AUS 4-484 (Burns 30, Marsh 48)

Kumar bowls outside off to Marsh and, true to form, the West Australian tries to cut a ball that really wasn't wide enough. He bottom-edges straight down into the pitch.

He follows up with a leave and cuts better, but straight to point for no run on the next ball.

FOUR! Marsh drives and it flies between the bowler and mid-on. I don't know where he was aiming with that stroke but it wasn't there. Not the most convincing shot but four runs all the same.

Marsh again tries to cut a ball that isn't wide enough and, again, belts it straight into the pitch. He needs to be careful with that.

8:27 AM - AUS 4-480 (Burns 30, Marsh 44)

Ashwin starts his 44th over over the wicket to Marsh and the left-hander leaves as it goes across in front of him.

Marsh tries to cut but gets an edge to fly past slip for three.

FOUR RUNS!! Burns goes down and sweeps very nicely from outside off. That's a nice stroke.

Burns defends the last two balls of the over. He's still struggling to read Ashwin's carom ball.

8:22 AM - AUS 4-473 (Burns 26, Marsh 41)

Bhuvneshwar Kumar replaces Shami. Can he produce a dangerous spell?

His first ball stays low and hits Marsh on the pads but it's pitched well outside off.

The next delivery's pretty similar and Marsh gets bat on ball this time to pick up an easy single to square leg.

FOUR! Kumar pitches just barely back of a length and Burns gets down low and hammers a pull shot to the boundary.

Burns defends to end the over.

8:18 AM - AUS 4-468 (Burns 22, Marsh 40)

Marsh cuts powerfully as Ashwin pitches too short and wide but the man in the deep cuts it off. Just a single.

Burns returns the strike with a single of his own before Marsh produces a carbon copy of his first cut shot for one more run.

There are a few fielding adjustments being made. Ashwin gets a short leg in place for Burns.

Burns gets a long stride in and ends the over with a watchful defensive stroke.

Burns gets a long stride in and ends the over with a watchful defensive stroke.

8:13 AM - AUS 4-465 (Burns 21, Marsh 38)

Shami bowls to Burns who's defending first up.

Burns gets on the front foot to Shami and drives through cover. He didn't quite get all of it though, so it's just three runs.

Marsh adds one with a French cut to fine leg and that's a 50-run partnership.

8:10 AM- AUS 4-461 (Burns 18, Marsh 37)

Marsh defends to start Ashwin's next over.

CRACK!! Ashwin gets too wide outside off and Marsh cuts powerfully to the point boundary for four.

He gets straight back to defending and sees out the rest of the over.

8:05 AM - AUS 4-457 (Burns 18, Marsh 33)

Mohammed Shami replaces Raina at the Paddington End.

BANG! Marsh sends Shami's first ball straight back past him and all the way to the boundary rope for four.

Short ball from Shami and Marsh gets on top of it, pulling from outside off to mid-wicket for a single.

Burns defends to the off side and looks for a cheeky single but he's sent back.

Five from the over.

8:00 AM - AUS 4-452 (Burns 18, Marsh 28)

BANG! Marsh whips Ashwin from well outside off to the vacant mid-on boundary for four runs.

Marsh brings up 450 for Australia with a single off his hip to mid-wicket.

Burns charges and tries to go to long-on but it flies to square leg off the inside edge for two.

7:58 AM - AUS 4-445 (Burns 16, Marsh 23)

Raina continues to Marsh who takes a single to mid-on.

FOUR!! Burns uses that space he's given himself by standing outside leg stump to cut hard to the boundary as Raina goes fast and wide.

That's a new highest Test score for Joe Burns - 16. In all seriousness, I'd really like to see the new-comer go well in this innings.

In pictures: Sydney Test, Day 2

7:56 AM - AUS 4-440 (Burns 12, Marsh 22)

Ashwin continues and Burns steals a single, defending behind point.

Marsh adds one more to mid-off and Burns is immediately watching very closely as he gets forward and defends.

He turns one around the corner nicely and he flies between the wickets to get back for two.

Interestingly, with Ashwin coming around the wicket Burns is standing outside leg.

7:53 AM - AUS 4-436 (Burns 9, Marsh 21)

Burns tries to turn Raina off his thigh but misses out.

Now he gets off strike with a single off his hip as Raina goes too short.

Marsh defends the rest of the over and that's a better one from the part-timer.

7:50 AM - AUS 4-435 (Burns 8, Marsh 21)

Ashwin's first ball beats Marsh down leg.

He pads up to the next one well outside off.

And before you know it, Ashwin's bowled another maiden to a defending Aussie batsman.

7:49 AM - AUS 4-435 (Burns 8, Marsh 21)

Suresh Raina will continue from the Paddington end.

SIX!! Marsh follows his younger partner's lead and charges Raina, belting him for a six back over his head.

Marsh gets to the pitch of the next one and just works a single to mid-on to end the over.

That's 15 from two overs after lunch. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that these two have been told to go out and set up a tea-time declaration.

7:45 AM - AUS 4-428 (Burns 8, Marsh 14)

Ashwin will restart to Burns.

FOUR!! Burns shuffles down the pitch and slaps it to the cover boundary.

AND ANOTHER!! Burns goes down the pitch against and this time hammers it over mid-on and to the boundary.

He looks a different man. I though he might get going after lunch.

Burns is squared up by the straighter ball to end the over. He defends safely but it doesn't look like he's picking it out of the hand.

7:00 AM - THAT'S LUNCH! AUS 4-420 (Burns 0*, Marsh 14*)

Australia will be disappointed to have lost Smith (117) and Watson (81) in that session but are still thoroughly in control.

Talk of a declaration has begun but with Marsh (14*) and Burns (0*) looking pretty shaky, a declaration may not be necessary.

Neither batsmen looked overly comfortable against Ashwin and Queensland opener Burns appears to be struggling with his role down the order, but he's only in his second Test and that may well change after lunch.

The Indian bowling was far better this morning than it was yesterday, with the quicks bowling good line and length, and Ashwin continuing to threaten.

INDIA bowling

Mohammed Shami: 2-80 off 23 overs

Ravichandran Ashwin: 1-98 off 37 overs

Umesh Yadav: 1-119 off 23 overs

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: 0-78 off 26 overs

Suresh Raina: 0-39 off 11 overs

6:59 AM - AUS 4-420 (Burns 0, Marsh 14)

Suresh Raina will get the last over before the break thanks to Ashwin's lightning-fast over rate.

FOUR! Marsh gets some width and cuts hard to the boundary. Bad, pressure-releasing delivery.

Marsh gets down the pitch a bit but it's just for two dots.

The last ball of the session beats Marsh's outside edge.

6:56 AM - AUS 4-416 (Burns 0, Marsh 10)

Ashwin bowls to Burns who tries to work off his thigh. The ball pops up and is taken at leg slip. India goes up but it was just thigh pad.

This is an awkward period for Burns who's usually a top-order batsman.

Burns defends the last ball from Ashwin and he's now 0 off 17.

6:54 AM - AUS 4-416 (Burns 0, Marsh 10)

Yadav continues around the wicket to Marsh who is leaving everything outside off, which is every ball, basically.

Marsh is trying to survive to lunch and Yadav's making it easy on him.

Marsh cuts the last ball of the over straight to point, and that's another maiden.

6:50 AM - AUS 4-416 (Burns 0, Marsh 10)

Ashwin continues and Burns's first defensive stroke is pretty shaky.

He tries to work off his hip and gets hit in the box.

He's not looking to score off Ashwin, who's bowling very tight lines and mixing it up with regulation offies, carom balls and straighter ones.

Another nice maiden over from Ashwin as we approach lunch.

6:47 AM - AUS 4-416 (Burns 0, Marsh 10)

Yadav continues with his around-the-wicket tactics to Marsh who leaves the first three deliveries.

He defends one but gets right back to leaving. This is what I'm talking about with right-armers coming around the wicket to lefties, it's an incredibly safe line for the batsman.

Maiden over for Yadav.

6:44 AM - AUS 4-416 (Burns 0, Marsh 10)

Ashwin continues to Marsh.

CHANCE! DROPPED!! Marsh prods at one and he edges to Murali Vijay at second slip. The opener dives right and gets a hand to it but that's another missed chance. Tough one but certainly not impossible.

Marsh gets off strike with a single behind square and Burns sees out the rest of the over.

The tone of this game has completely changed now that India has perked up in the field.

6:42 AM - AUS 4-415 (Burns 0, Marsh 9)

Burns is receiving a few choice words from Virat Kohli as he marks centre.

Burns looks to work off his hip but doesn't get anything on it.

The next ball is angled in at off and he leaves very close to the stumps. That prompts a few more words from Kohli.

Burns leaves the last ball of the over.

6:40 AM - SMITH'S GONE FOR 117!! c Saha b Yadav. AUS 4-415 (Marsh 9*)

Smith tries to drive to the off side but his feet don't move and he gets a healthy edge through to the keeper. Yadav finally gets his name in the books.

He walks off his home ground to raucous applause from the SCG faithful.

Joe Burns is out in the middle.

6: 39 AM - AUS 3-415 (Smith 117, Marsh 9)

Yadav is into his 21st over. Some good news for him - his economy rate is under a run a ball.

6:36 AM - AUS 3-415 (Smith 117, Marsh 9)

Ashwin will continue. He's into his 34th over now.

He sends one down leg and Saha snaffles it. Ashwin appeals but he's the only one as Smith was miles away from hitting it.

Smith gets a single to the off side.

Marsh defends the rest of the over with two slips, a silly mid-off and catching cover breathing down his neck.

6:33 AM - AUS 3-414 (Smith 116, Marsh 9)

Umesh Yadav returns to the attack and bowls to Smith. He works another easy single off his pads.

Marsh gets one off his hip to deep fine leg as Yadav angles in from around the wicket. I'm not a fan of this tactic of right-arm quicks immediately coming around the wicket to left-handed batsmen.

Smith dabs one to a vacant mid-wicket region and gets a single of his own.

Marsh leaves outside off to end the over.

6:29 AM - AUS 3-411 (Smith 114, Marsh 8)

Ashwin will bowl to Marsh from around the wicket. This is his first look at a left-hander since the openers went out after lunch yesterday.

Marsh gives the strike back to Smith with a single off his hip.

Smith charges and checks his swing, just poking it to leg. That was a bit uppish but well controlled.

And Marsh defends to point to end the over.

6:26 AM - AUS 3-409 (Smith 113, Marsh 7)

Shami continues.

Smith takes an easy single off his pads as Shami angles one in at leg stump.

Marsh defends his first ball from Shami.

EDGED! Marsh tries to drive through cover but he's late on it and his edge flies past gully and to the boundary for four.

And he takes an easy single to end the over.

6:22 AM - AUS 3-403 (Smith 112, Marsh 2)

Ashwin continues to Smith, who uses his feet and works to mid-wicket. He wanted a run there but Kohli was equal to it.

Smith retains the strike as Ashwin tries to slide one across him and he pushes it to point for a quick single.

In pictures: Sydney Test, Day 2

6:18 AM - AUS 3-402 (Smith 111, Marsh 2)

Marsh gets off the mark straight away with two runs off his pads.

Marsh defends the rest of the over and that's a good one for Shami and India.

6:16 AM - WATSON'S GONE FOR 81!! c Ashwin b Shami. AUS 3-400 (Smith 111*)

He goes for a pull shot and, not for the first time, holes out to deep mid-wicket. That's devastating for Watson who'd played so watchfully all morning.

Nineteen runs shy of his first ton since the Ashes, that's gotta hurt.

A man who knows a little something about falling short of a century, Shaun Marsh, is the next man in.

6:15 AM - AUS 2-400 (Smith 111, Watson 81)

Shami bangs one in short and outside off to Watson who shapes to pull but thinks better of it.

6:12 AM - AUS 2-400 (Smith 111, Watson 81)

Ashwin is coming around the wicket to Watson now.

He gets one to straighten and almost slide past the outside edge but Watson was watching close enough to defend well.

Now he uses his feet and takes a single to mid-on.

THAT'S 400 UP FOR AUSTRALIA.

6:09 AM - AUS 2-399 (Smith 111, Watson 80)

Shami continues to Watson.

Watson leaves outside off and follows that up with a pushed cover drive for no run.

He tries to drive to off again but gets another inside edge and takes a single as it dribbles to the very vacant leg-side field.

Smith defends the last ball of the over on the back foot to point.

6:05 AM - AUS 2-398 (Smith 111, Watson 79)

Ashwin will start his 30th over now that everyone's rehydrated.

Smith takes a single off his hip and again was looking for two from the start. He can't be hurt too badly.

There's a leg slip, short leg, catching mid-wicket and a catching mid-on in place for Watto.

Watson gets down the pitch and bisects the leg-side field for a quick single.

Ashwin gets one to turn and bounce and beats Smith down the leg side.

Replays show that was a dropped, albeit incredibly tough, chance by Saha as Smith edged down leg.

6:00 AM - AUS 2-396 (Smith 110, Watson 78)

Mohammed Shami back into the attack to Smith.

He bangs one in short and Smith brings it down from outside off for two runs through mid-wicket. He's really making it look easy.

Smith works off his pads and sets off quickly, looking for two but can only get one as the man on the boundary comes in to cut it off.

That's drinks.

5:57 AM - AUS 2-393 (Smith 107, Watson 78)

Change of pace, literally, here with Ravi Ashwin coming into the attack against Watson.

Watson defends and edge past short leg for a single behind square.

Ashwin comes around the wicket to Smith who charges, only to defend.

He then sweeps and picks up an easy single to fine leg.

Watson defends a few from Ashwin over the wicket, and that's the over bowled. Two from it.

5:54 AM - AUS 2-391 (Smith 106, Watson 77)

Yadav bowls to Watson, who gets off strike immediately with a single off his hip to mid-wicket.

WHACK! Yadav pitches short and Smith drives powerfully off the back foot to the cover boundary for four.

Five from that over.

5:51 AM - AUS 2-386 (Smith 102, Watson 76)

Kumar gets one to move away from Watson as he looks to play to leg. That popped up a little bit.

Now Watson picks up two more runs as an awkward bounce off the wicket block leads to yet another mis-field at mid-wicket. This must be irritating for the bowlers.

And he steals a single to mid-off to retain the strike.

5:48 AM - CENTURY FOR SMITH!! 168 balls (14 x 4s). AUS 2-383 (Watson 73*)

The skipper whips a four through mid-wicket and tots up his fourth ton from as many Tests this summer.

He has looked great all innings and now he needs to help his NSW team-mate, Shane Watson, to a pressure-relieving ton of his own.

In pictures: Sydney Test, Day 2

5:45 AM - AUS 2-379 (Smith 98, Watson 73)

Yadav will continue to Watson, who drives hard but straight to cover to start the over.

Watson gives the strike to Smith with an edged single to square leg. This could be it, Yadav's been very expensive.

Smith gets two off his hip to move to 98.

He defends and leaves the next two balls. One left in the over.

5:40 AM - AUS 2-376 (Smith 96, Watson 72)

Kumar continues to Watson, who's defending.

FOUR!! Watson gets his first boundary of the day, just guiding Kumar off his pads to the fine-leg boundary. Bad line from the medium-pacer.

And he gives Smith the strike with a single behind point.

Smith can't get the ton yet, playing out three dots to end the over.

5:36 AM - AUS 2-371 (Smith 96, Watson 67)

Umesh Yadav comes into the attack for the first time today. He had a rough time of it yesterday.

Watson looks to whip through mid-wicket but gets a leading edge and picks up one to cover. Edgy but a few innings ago Watson closes the face on that and gets caught. He was saved there by playing with a pretty open face.

FOUR MORE! Smith gets on top of a short ball and hammers it over the in-field and to the boundary with a brilliant pull shot.

He moves to 96 with a single off his hip.

A jumping Watson follows suit and Smith defends the last ball of another expensive over from Yadav.

5:30 AM - AUS 2-364 (Smith 91, Watson 65)

Kumar continues to Watson.

Watson drives a little edgily in front of point and cover makes a meal of picking it up and Watto picks up a single.

The man who mucked up that fielding? Lokesh Rahul. His ordinary Test in the field continues. He dropped a sitter yesterday an missed a chance to catch Warner at point.

Virat Kohli is not pleased.

5:27 AM - AUS 2-363 (Smith 91, Watson 64)

Shami continues and Smith looks to drive but it's straight to mid-on for a dot.

FOUR! Shami gets on to Smith's pads and that's always runs. In this case it's the first boundary of the day to square leg.

He's continuing his tactic of walking across to give himself opportunities to whip to leg regularly and doing it very nicely.

BANG! Shami goes too wide and Smith plays a beautiful cover drive for four. That's the impact of Smith walking across his stumps, bowlers try to go wider to compensate and get hammered on to the off side.

Smith moves into the 90s.

5:23 AM - AUS 2-355 (Smith 83, Watson 64)

Kumar continues to Watson and Wriddihman Saha is standing up to the stumps.

Watson cuts hard but it's straight to point for a dot ball.

Kumar's hitting his spots nicely but he's not frightening batsmen with his 120kph deliveries.

Watson picks up a tight two to to mid-wicket to end the over. There was probably an overthrow on offer but Watto's got the turning circle of a Mack truck so it stays at two.

That brings up 150 runs between this pair.

5:18 AM - AUS 2-353 (Smith 83, Watson 62)

Shami continues and Watson leaves outside off.

Shami angles one in at the stumps and Watto plays that text book forward defensive of his.

He tries to drive straight and again it catches the inside edge and bounces to mid-on.

OUCH! Watson tries to get under a bouncer but it stays a bit lower than anticipated and he gets clocked on the back of the helmet. He seems alright as he gets up and takes off immediately.

That flew almost to the boundary and they pick up three leg byes.

Smith emulates Watson with an inside-edged drive to mid-on to end the over.

Good over from Shami. He was comfortably the best Indian seamer on day one.

5:14 AM - AUS 2-350 (Smith 83, Watson 62)

Kumar continues and Smith is defending again.

He leaves outside off as Kumar gets one to shape away a little bit.

Smith ends the over with two more balls left alone outside the off stump.

Kumar's being careful here. Smith was walking across his stumps and turning decent balls into leg-side runs yesterday so Kumar may be going a bit wider intentionally now.

5:10 AM - AUS 2-350 (Smith 83, Watson 62)

Mohammed Shami will bowl to Shane Watson from the other end.

Watson defends the first few balls. He knows he needs to reach a ton here.

On another note, India's first nine balls have just about all been on the money - in and around off stump.

Watto looks to get a bit aggressive and crunch an off drive but it's a bit on the inside edge and it trickles to mid-on.

He picks up the first run of the day with another single off his hip. There were a lot of those yesterday.

And Smith ends the over with a single whipped off his toes to fine leg.

5:06 AM - AUS 2-348 (Smith 82, Watson 61)

Kumar gets us back underway to a defending Smith.

A watchful first five deliveries from the Aussie skipper, blocking every ball so far.

Make that a watchful first six deliveries. Smith defends the first over and that's a maiden to start.
