D.C. United has announced the club has signed forward Patrick Mullins to a contract extension.

Mullins, 25, invigorated the DCU attack after being acquired in a July trade from New York City FC, scoring eight goals and adding two assists in 14 regular season appearances.

"Patrick is a player who had a major breakout after we traded for him last summer," DCU general manager Dave Kasper said in a club release. "His work ethic on both sides of the ball, positional awareness, and nose for the goal affect the outcome of games week after week.

"Securing Patrick's future is another big step for the club, and we look forward to his contributions this season and beyond."

According to The Washington Post, Mullins' wages were bumped from a base salary of $96,250 in 2016 to $250,000 in 2017. Before the extension, his contract was set to expire at the conclusion of the 2017 campaign.

D.C. United opens its MLS season on March 4 against Sporting Kansas City at RFK Stadium.
