Dempsey, Howard and Bradley among six United States changes for Gold Cup knockouts

United States head coach Bruce Arena has made six changes to his Gold Cup squad, with Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley among the new additions for the knockout stage.

Every team is allowed to make up to six alterations to their squad following the Gold Cup group stage and Arena has taken the full quota to tweak his team.

Colorado Rapids shot-stopper Howard, Toronto FC midfielder Bradley, Seattle Sounders attacker Dempsey and Toronto FC striker Jozy Altidore all have more 100 caps for the United States.

Uncapped FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez, who could see his first minutes in a national team shirt since filing his one-time switch from Mexico to the U.S., and Portland Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe were the other two players added whom Arena hopes will strengthen their chances of winning the Gold Cup.

The six players to be replaced are goalkeepers Brad Guzan and Sean Johnson, midfielders Alejandro Bedoya, Cristian Roldan and Kelyn Rowe, and forward Dom Dwyer.

The United States will discover on Sunday evening who it will face in the quarterfinals next week having topped Group B ahead of Panama.

The U.S side defeated Nicaragua 3-0 on Saturday with a completely different starting line-up to the one that had beaten Martinique 3-2.
