Malaysia defender, Matthew Davies has admitted that he prefers and is more comfortable playing in the right back position as compared to playing in the left back position.

Davies was deployed as a left back during last year’s AFF Suzuki Cup by head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee, but he admitted that he is not entirely comfortable playing in that position.

The Pahang defender told Goal: “Not particularly (playing at left back), to be very honest. But at the same time, wherever the coach asked you to play, that’s where you play.”

“Although I prefer playing at the right back, but If I have to play there, I’ll play at left back but of course I’m more comfortable with my left foot and at the right back,” the 22-year old defender told us just before Malaysia's training session on Thursday.

Davies added that the coaches are yet to decide on who they will deploy in the left back position in their friendly against the Philippines on March 22 after Nazirul Naim had to be withdraw from the squad due to injury.

“The coaches are still deciding on that but there are still players that can come in the left position so it should be okay.”

Commenting on the game against Philippines, Davies emphasises on the importance for the team to win their first game of 2017.

“Philippines are a very strong team and they are ranked highly among the South-East Asian countries. They have a lot of mixed heritage players and quality in the squad.”

“We have not been together for a few months but it would be very important for us to win and kick off our new year in the right way.”

Meanwhile, Kim Swee has stated that there is a possibility that Davies could be deployed in the left back position, but he will see the performance of Khair Jones and Rizal Ghazali as well.

“The good thing about Matthew Davies is that he can play on both sides. Rizal Ghazali can play on the right, while Khair Jones can play on the left.”

“Depending on the match, as I will also need to see the performance of Rizal and Khair before I pick who will play in the respective positions,” added Kim Swee.

Kim Swee has been saying that he wants a win against the Philippines in order to improve the Harimau Malaysia's FIFA ranking.
