The 29-year-old's contract was set to expire at the end of the 2017-18 season, but he has put to rest any lingering doubt about his club future by penning a new deal.

“With his versatility on the pitch and his calm, reliable character in the dressing room, Fabian has developed into a leading player within the team,” Borussia sporting director Max Eberl told the club's official website. “We’re delighted that he will be remaining with us for another three years.”

Johnson has spent three seasons with the Foals, joining the club prior to the 2014-15 season after three campaigns with Hoffenheim.

“It’s wonderful to be able to carry on playing for this great club,” Johnson said. “After joining Gladbach from Hoffenheim three years ago, one of my goals was to further develop myself and another was to play on the European stage – I have achieved both of them here. I’m very much looking forward to continuing along this path together with Borussia.”
