Roger Federer booked his place in the French Open quarter-finals after completing a 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-1 win over Gael Monfils.

Play was suspended due to bad light on Sunday, with the match tied at one set all, but the Swiss second seed quickly seized control when the action resumed and set up a clash with compatriot Stan Wawrinka.

Monfils, a semi-finalist in 2008, was broken in the first game of both the third and fourth sets as a freshened up Federer scrutinised the Frenchman’s serve.

The Monfils meltdown continued into the latter stages of the match, with him losing the last five games, although he did save match points with a drop volley before a wild forehand ended his participation in Paris.

"I feel fresh and pumped up to be back in the quarter-finals again after missing out last year," said Federer, who was beaten by Ernests Gulbis in the last 16 in 2014.

"It's special to play Stan, there aren't many Swiss players in the draw. I'm quite positive about it."
