Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella has cast serious doubt on Mario Gomez's hopes of playing in this summer's World Cup, revealing that the Germany international is unlikely to play again this season. The 28-year-old had only just returned from five months on the sidelines with a knee injury when he suffered medial ligament damage in March's Serie A clash with Napoli. It was initially thought that Gomez would only be out of action for just three weeks but Montella thinks that the striker's campaign is over. "I fear we won't see him again this season," the Viola coach told reporters. "That is my feeling, seeing as he's not even training with the team yet. "It's a shame, as we hardly had him at our disposal. Perhaps there have been a few too many opinions expressed on his injuries." However, Montella is hopeful that Giuseppe Rossi, who has also been plagued by knee injury problems, will be able to play some part in next month's Coppa Italia final against Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico. "Will he be available? I hope so," the former Italy international enthused. "That is the hope of a coach, but we'll have to see if his fitness levels remain like this or improve."
