Gautam Gambhir underwent a fitness test while Yuvraj Singh has been asked to undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy on Wednesday.

While Gambhir is in line to replace Lokesh Rahul, who is uncertain for the Eden Gardens Test against New Zealand follwing injury concerns, the team management is looking at Yuvraj for the shorter formats, given the long home season ahead.

Gambhir, who played the last of his 56 Tests against England at the Oval in 2014, was in solid form during the Duleep Trophy with scores of 77, 90, 59, 94 and 36 for India Blues.

If Rahul is unavailable for the Eden Test, it will be a body blow to India, who have depended on his aggression and consistency at the top of the order.

A stylish opening batsman, Gambhir formed a successful opening partnership with Virender Sehwag and hammered nine hundreds and 21 fifties before indifferent form forced the selectors to look at other options.

Meanwhile, Yuvraj, who last played for India at the World T20 at home earlier this year, has struggled to be among the runs but the team management might have kept his abilities with the ball in mind. India's 2011 World Cup hero was in poor form during the World T20 and does not have the bulk of runs Gambhir has scored in recent times.
