2015 African champions Cote d’Ivoire were left stunned in front of their home fans following a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Guinea as they started their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in Bouake.

Despite Seydou Doumbia scoring a brace, new coach Marc Wilmots suffered his first competitive defeat in charge of the team. The Elephants came into the game on the back of a 5-0 loss to the Netherlands in a friendly match last week.

They needed a victory to honour the memory of recently deceased former national team midfielder Cheick Tiote but ended up losing.

Doumbia gave the hosts the lead in the 15th minute before Guinea equalised in the 32nd minute through Naby Keita’s strike that goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo spilt and Abdoulaye Sadio Diallo pounced on the rebound to make it 1-1.

The Elephants went up through Doumbia on 62 minutes before Guinea once again tied the scores through Francois Kamano.

Naby Keita then scored his brace to secure victory for Guinea in the 79th minute to give them a famous win and sent them closer to Cameroon 2019.

Former champions Zambia and Nigeria also lost at home to Mozambique and South Africa respectively.
