The Haryana government arranged a grand felicitation ceremony for Sakshi Malik with the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar handing a cash reward of Rs 2.5 crore to the Rio medallist.

Sakshi ended India's agonising wait in Rio by winning a Bronze medal in 58kg freestyle wrestling. She also became India's first woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal. Sakshi, who returned home today from Rio had a rousing reception on her arrival.

However, at the felicitation ceremony, the Haryana CM forgot the name of India's silver medallist PV Sindhu and even went on to say that the Hyderabadi girl is from Karnataka.

“Humare liye bohot hi garv ki baat hai ki raksha bandhan ke din humari do betiyon ne desh ka naam ucha kiya hai...Ek Haryana se Sakshi Malik aur dusri Karnataka se…Sindhu…(asks his team: kya naam hai)..PV Sindhu, jo rajat padak jeeti hai..(it’s a proud moment for us that two of our daughters won medals on Raksha Bandhan. Sakshi Malik from Haryana and Sindhu from Karnataka),” he said.

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt won his third straight 100-meter Olympic gold with a time of 9.81 seconds. He finished well ahead of the American Justin Gatlin and Canada's Andre de Grasse, who settled for the silver and bronze medals respectively. Best quotes from 2016 Rio Olympics

This is not the first time that an Indian politician has shown any kind of ignorance vis-a-vis India's Olympians. Sports Minister Vijay Goel misspelt Dipa Karmakar's name when he wished her following her outstanding performance at the vault final and goofed up athletes names later. Telengana's Deputy CM even went on to say that he would arrange for a better coach for Sindhu so she could win Gold the next time, clearly undermining Pullela Gopichand's role.

Sindhu, who is from Hyderabad, was given a grand welcome by the Telangana government on Monday. She and her coach Gopichand were taken on an open bus to a stadium, where thousands of people assembled to honour the duo. The ace shuttler was later felicitated by the Andhra Pradesh CM.
