The teams enter the contest following contrasting results in their previous games. While Punjab trounced Royal Challengers Bangalore - despite an AB de Villiers show - Kolkata were stunned by a late Mumbai Indians heist courtesy Nitish Rana and Hardik Pandya. Punjab come into the tie with victories in both their games, while Kolkata have one win from two matches.

Kolkata, though, will welcome the switch to home, where they are traditionally very strong. They will also be boosted by the return of Umesh Yadav and Shakib Al Hasan, who have joined the team after missing out for different reasons. Shakib was away on national duty while Umesh was rested after a hectic home season.

Kolkata will need the presence of the duo, especially since they seem to have lost Chris Lynn, at least temporarily. Lynn, who smashed an astonishing 41-ball 93* in the ten-wicket win over Gujarat Lions, injured his left shoulder while trying to catch Jos Buttler in Mumbai.

The injury means Robin Uthappa should once again return to the top to partner Gautam Gambhir, who started the tournament well with an unbeaten 76 against Gujarat. Kolkata also have another in-form batsman in Manish Pandey, who made a brilliant unbeaten 81 against Mumbai.

Kolkata have posted big totals in both the games but their bowling, quite uncharacteristically, has leaked runs. Kolkata conceded 183 to Gujarat before allowing Mumbai's batsmen to chase down a target of 179. Shakib's arrival and the presence of Umesh could help the bowling line-up get back on track.

Punjab, meanwhile, have played a brand of cricket that gels well with Glenn Maxwell, their new captain. The Australian batsman himself led their charge with the bat, smashing unbeaten knocks of 44 and 43 respectively in the two games from a combined 42 deliveries. Hashim Amla has a half-century to his name while the other top-order batsmen too have had decent hits.

It will be interesting to see if Punjab continue to bat Axar Patel in the top order, like they did in the first two games.

While Punjab's batsmen have played with freedom, their bowlers have maintained good discipline. That they restricted Bangalore to 148 despite de Villiers going berserk while making a 46-ball 89 says it all. Given their positive results, Punjab are unlikely to make any major changes, unless the conditions demand so.

Head-to-head record:

Played 19. Kolkata 12. Punjab 7.

Head-to-head at the Eden Gardens:

Played 8. Kolkata 6. Punjab 2.
