Italy's World Cup qualifier against Albania was halted after 57 minutes after away fans threw fireworks and smoke bombs onto the pitch in Palermo.

The hosts were leading 1-0 in the Stadio Renzo Barbera thanks to Daniele De Rossi's early goal, with Albania lending a rowdy presence in the stands.

Visiting supporters had been lighting flares throughout the game, but play was finally stopped when the incendiary materials were hurled onto the pitch approaching the hour mark.

After consulting with players referee Slavko Vincic decided to pause the game, taking both teams off the pitch.
