Hernandez played more than 80 matches with El Tri, winning two Gold Cups and the 1999 Confederation Cup in Mexico. While the ex-striker acknowledged it's difficult to pit historic teams against present ones, he didn't hold back in his criticism of today's Mexico side.

"For me, they play ugly, they play with a manager who doesn't show me anything — that's my opinion," Hernandez told reporters. "Times have changed. The way they play is different than how we did. You can't compare, but I don't like how they play. Wearing the shirt of the Mexican national team isn't just to stop and think that you're going to win because of that."

Osorio has overseen just one defeat in his tenure — a 7-0 loss to Chile at the Copa America Centenario — but Hernandez said the team's successes in World Cup qualification and breaking long losing streaks in the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, and other countries doesn't impress him.

"It doesn't tell me anything because the quality of the people they've faced isn't at a high level, and I feel that from there you can break any record without any sort of merit," he said.
