Meet Shardul Thakur, rookie pacer called up for Tests vs West Indies

The Indian Test squad for the West Indies tour in July-August features a relatively unknown name among the regular players in the list. Right-arm medium pacer Shardul Thakur has been included in the 17-member squad to be led by Virat Kohli.

Shardul, 24, plays for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy tournament and has come to the notice of the Indian selectors after a couple of impressive seasons in domestic cricket.

HERE ARE 10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SHARDUL THAKUR:

1. Shardul Thakur was born in the town of Palghar, 87 km north of Mumbai, on October 16, 1991.

2. Shardul made his first class debut against Rajasthan at the KL Saini Ground in Jaipur on November 9, 2012. He has since picked up 133 wickets in 37 matches at an impressive average of 27.53.

3. The young pacer played a crucial role in Mumbai's 41st Ranji Trophy triumph this year as he picked up 41 wickets at an average of 24.51.

4. Thakur picked up eight wickets in the final against Saurashtra and finished as the sixth highest wicket-taker in the tournament this season.

5. In the 2014-15 season, Shardul was the joint highest wicket-taker with 48 scalps at 20.81.

6. His performance in the 2014-15 Ranji season had earned him a place in the India A squad for the four-day games against Australia A and South Africa A.

7. Shardul was picked up by Kings XI Punjab franchise in the 2014 Indian Premier League auction for Rs 20 lakh, but he has played just one game in three seasons so far.

8. Shardul was recently in the news for slamming the Kings XI Punjab management and the IPL after he was made to warm the bench since being bought in 2014.

9. Shardul was consequently released by the Kings XI franchise midway through IPL 2016.

10. Kings XI have also released batsman Armaan Jaffer and all-rounder Pardeep Sahu along with Thakur this season.
