"To be fair, I'm still devastated," Merson said on Sky Sports. "I mean, he was such a top bloke, it was unbelievable."

The former England international continued by calling Ehiogu a "man-mountain" before trailing off as he grew increasingly upset.

He added: "You know what? Billy Joel sings a song about it: only the good die young."

Ehiogu won two League Cups, the first with Villa in 1995 and the second with Middlesbrough in 2004.

He earned four caps for England, scoring one goal, which came in a friendly win over Spain in 2001.
