Messi: Title won't save Barcelona's season logo 18-05-2014

Lionel Messi says he’s not convinced that a Spanish title win will render Barcelona’s season a success.

The Catalans head into the final fixtures of their Liga campaign knowing that victory over Atletico Madrid will hand them a 23rd Spanish title at the expense of Diego Simeone’s outfit.

Yet even the prospect of being crowned Kings of Spain does not automatically make up for the quarter-final exit from the Champions League and Copa del Rey final defeat in the eyes of the Argentine superstar.

“I think La Liga is an important tournament,” said Messi. “We always say it is really important because it means a lot; the work of the whole year.

“It has been a tough, difficult year, and each season we are experiencing tough circumstances and we are overcoming them. So I think if we get the trophy, it will be great for all of us.

“I don’t know if it would save the season, but it would be an important trophy for sure.”

The 26-year-old has a busy summer ahead, with a trip to the World Cup with Argentina following Saturday’s La Liga decider.

And despite a lot of expectation on the Albiceleste, Messi believes that his countrymen are in a positive frame of mind heading for Brazil.

“There is no pressure. I think Argentina are obliged to fight for the World Cup,” he added. “The name ‘Argentina’ means that we are always among the favourites in a tournament.

“I think we are doing well at the moment, we have a good chance to do something important and we are going into the World Cup calmly and hopeful of reaching our objective.”

Barcelona’s winner-takes-all clash with Atletico kicks off at 18:00CET on Saturday at Camp Nou, while Argentina begin their World Cup campaign against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 15.
