Nico edges out Lewis for pole

Nico Rosberg snatched pole position off Lewis Hamilton at the very end of an enthralling wet-dry Hungarian GP qualifying.

On a drying track after a torrential downpour that saw Q1 end an hour after its scheduled finish, Hamilton looked to have mastered the ever-changing conditions and had provisional pole, but was forced to slow down on his final flying lap after Fernando Alonso's spin brought out yellow flags.

The dramatic sight of a McLaren blocking a charging Mercedes did not affect Hamilton's team-mate further back, and championship-leader Rosberg was able to clinch his fourth pole of the season by 0.143s.

However, the German's pace on his pole lap is sure to be scrutinised as Rosberg set a purple middle sector while the double yellow flags were being waved.

"For sure there was double waved [yellows], but I had a very big lift and lost a lot of time as a result," Rosberg, who was called to the stewards after the British GP, said. "I'm sure that'll be okay."

Nico Rosberg took advantage of Lewis Hamilton's early crash in Hungary.

As expected, it was Red Bull who followed the Silver Arrows, with Daniel Ricciardo again winning the Saturday battle against Max Verstappen - though they too were caught out by the late chaos in Budapest.

Sebastian Vettel was fifth while Kimi Raikkonen didn't even reach the final shootout and will start the race in 14th.

Alonso ran in seventh despite his Turn Nine spin as McLaren had both cars in Q3 for the first time since 2014, with Jenson Button 0.3s and a place back from his Spanish team-mate.
