The world champion set the pace with a 1:38.841 on the intermediate tyres, having already been quickest in the day's opening session.

The rain meant a slow start to the session as the drivers waited in their garages before Daniel Ricciardo ventured out on the intermediate tyres.

He was followed onto the track by Daniil Kvyat in the sister Red Bull and Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes, but with conditions still treacherous it wasn't long until the Silver Arrows man ended up in the wall at Turn Six.

On the exit of the corner, Rosberg lit up the rear tyres on the W07 as he crossed the slippery road markings and the car speared into the wall, breaking his front wing.

Ironically, it was the new front wing which Mercedes hadn't used during Practice One to protect from damage due to a lack of spares. At the request of the FIA he parked up on the side of the track after attempting to limp back to the pits.

Team boss Toto Wolff told Sky Sports F1 that they team would ideally have called Rosberg in for a set of full wets, but the new radio restrictions meant they weren't allowed to.

The Austrian confirmed they did have another wing for Rosberg to use during the rest of the weekend, but the world champions did put the old nose onto Hamilton's car before sending him out on the track.

More regular rain during P2 prevented the drivers from venturing onto the dry tyres that had been used in first practice, with all of the best times posted on inters.

Indeed, such were the conditions neither of the Sauber drivers took part in the session with the team feeling there was nothing to learn by sending their drivers out on the intermediate tyres. Max Verstappen did not leave the pits either.

Williams did sent out Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa late in the session, but only so they could carry out pit stop practice, while neither Renault driver posted a time either.
