Ravindra Jadeja reveals why he and Ravichandran Ashwin are a dangerous pair

India wrapped up a huge 197-run victory over New Zealand to celebrate their 500th Test in style but it was not easy sailing throughout. There was a time when the Black Caps had dropped anchor and looked like staging a firm recovery.

But the trusted firm of Messrs Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin got to work, picking up nine wickets - the Kiwis, who had shown some promise on a turning pitch, lost the battle of guile and attrition to two of the most dangerous spinners in the world. They lost their last five first innings wickets for seven runs, setting the stage for India's batsmen in their second dig.

Quick fifties and quick runs from Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma and Jadeja, then set the stage for Ashwin, who became the second fastest to man to take 200 Test wickets, then snared another fifer (his 19th overall) and his fifth haul of ten wickets in a match.

Jadeja, the junior partner in the spin partnership firm, trumped Ashwin to win the Man-of-the-Match award for his all-round show (42*, 50* and a fifer). The left-arm spinner, elated after proving his worth yet again, threw light on why exactly, he and Ashwin form such a dangerous partnership.

Remember, New Zealand, responding to India's first innings 318, were cruising along at 159/1. Tom Latham and Kane Williamson were using their feet and getting to the pitch of the ball, smothering the turn whenever they could. By the end of Day 2, the tourists were in a formidable position - that's when Ashwin and Jadeja joined forces to bring India back in the game. But there was considerabe planning that forced open the floodgates.

"Whenever we don't get regular wickets, we talk a lot. When Latham and Williamson were batting so well in the first innings, Ashwin and I talked in the break and we discussed what lines to bowl and what angles to use. We discussed whether we should bowl wider of the crease and where exactly to pitch," Jadeja said at the post-match presentations.

This is a destructive combination. Fast bowlers hunt in pairs - Stuart Broad and James Anderson, Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn. In the past, Wasim-Waqar, Ambrose-Walsh, Donald-Pollock have inflicted untold damage on batsmen around the globe.

Jadeja and Ashwin, who started their fairytale romance in 2013, are just about warming up. This is a long home season and the two have got off to a dream start. The Black Caps, English and the Aussies had better watch out.
