Wayne Rooney continues to be linked with a summer move away from Manchester United, but Stoke hold no interest in the forward at present.

With the 31-year-old having fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford, it is expected that he will go in search of regular game time when the transfer window re-opens.

Various landing spots have been mooted for the England international, from a possible return to his roots at Everton to a foreign adventure in Major League Soccer or the Chinese Super League.

Stoke were also reported to be among those eager to discuss a deal for the vastly-experienced striker, but Potters chief executive Tony Scholes claims there is no substance to those rumours.

He said in The Sentinel: “What I can't do is shed any light on where the rumours have come from.

“That happens at this time of year. We have some speculation, some of it is based upon some truth, no smoke without fire, but other times you get wild speculation, and the Wayne Rooney one falls into the latter category.

“Wayne Rooney has been one of the best players of his generation. He has been, and still is, a great football player.

“But there have been no conversations whatsoever about Wayne Rooney coming to Stoke.”

Rooney made 39 appearances for United in the 2016-17 campaign, netting eight goals.

Those efforts helped him to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, to complement a similar record held with the England national team.

He was, however, restricted to just 15 Premier League starts, with Jose Mourinho often favouring other options.
