While Toronto FC has continued to top the table in Major League Soccer for several weeks, its mercurial star has seen a drop in goal production that belied the team's overall performance.

Sebastian Giovinco had not scored a goal since TFC's 3-2 victory over Minnesota United on May 13, and while he had missed a majority of the matches since then, it was still strange not to see the 2015 MLS MVP get his name on the scoresheet.

NY derby headlines MLS rivalry week

Giovinco, who had still been notching assists in MLS play and scored a goal in the Canadian Championship since returning from a thigh injury, finally put a ball in the back of the net in league action on Friday night. The TFC frontman latched on to a volleyed cross-field pass from Victor Vazquez and, after letting it bounce in front of himself and New England Revolution defender Benjamin Angoua, cut inside before unleashing a low drive back across the face of goal and past Revs goalkeeper Cody Cropper.

The stoppage time goal was TFC's second in a 2-0 victory over the Revs, pushing the club to a four-point lead over second-place Chicago Fire in the Supporters' Shield race.

For Giovinco, finally getting back onto the scoresheet was a positive, as was helping his side maintain its perch atop the league standings.

"I'm happy. When I play and score a goal I think, especially for a striker, I think it's important," Giovinco said. "It's important also [that] we win. We did a great job, [got a] great result, so it was a nice night."
