Shikhar Dhawan (51), Lokesh Rahul (50) and Rohit Sharma (54) struck brilliant fifties, while Chetestwar Pujara too came up with a solid knock of 34 to steer the Indians to 258 for 3 on Day 1 of their first practice match against the West Indies Cricket Board President's XI at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts on Saturday.

However, captain Virat Kohli and batsman Ajinkya Rahane failed to produce good outings. Both Kohli (14) and Rahane (5) were dismissed quickly after the openers retired following their blistering knocks.

But Pujara and Rohit ensured that the visitors end the day on a high. At stumps, Rohit was not out on 54 with Amit Mishra on 18.

For the hosts, Jomel Warrican took two wickets while Damion Jacobs scalped one.

Left-handed Dhawan looked compact as his 50 came off 88 balls with seven boundaries while Rahul looked equally comfortable during his half-century that took him 99 balls with five fours and six.

While Dhawan retired when India reached 93 for no loss at lunch, Rahul came out hit the first six off the innings and then with a single completed his milestone before being asked to comeback.

None of the West Indian bowlers could trouble the Indian batsmen during the 28 overs in the first session after Kohli opted to bat. The rules allow 12 players to play while 11 could field.

Earlier, the Indians decided to rest off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and opener Murali Vijay.

Brief Scores: Indians 258/3 in 93 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 51 retd, Lokesh Rahul 50 retd, Rohit Sharma 54 not out, Cheteshwar Pujara 34 retd).
