India captain Virat Kohli maintained his red-hot form as he hammered his third double hundred this year to help the hosts take firm control over England on day four of the fourth Test at the Wankhede Stadium today.

India, leading 2-0 in the five-match series, went past 550 in the first session, 150 runs ahead of England.

The 28-year-old Kohli brought up his 200 off 302 balls and celebrated with a leap in the air, bringing the strong crowd at the stadium overlooking the Arabian Sea to their feet.

Kohli batted majestically, rarely looked in trouble, and hit 23 fours with sublime stroke-making.

He also shared a record 200-plus stand for the eighth wicket with lower-order batsman Jayant Yadav, who also scored his second Test fifty.

Kohli, who is enjoying a dream run in 2016, joined the elite list of gentlemen with this knock.

The Delhi dasher is the fifth batsman in the world after Michael Clarke (4), Don Bradman (3), Ricky Ponting (3) and Brendon McCullum (3) to score three double hundreds in a calendar year.

Kohli's first double hundred came against the West Indies, while the second was against New Zealand in Indore.

Kohli, who scored his 15th Test ton yesterday, is also the first Indian to hit three double hundreds in a year.
