According to the club's announcement on their social media, assistant head coach Darren Read will step in as interim head coach. Pulau Pinang FA president Zairil Khir Johari added that a new head coach will be appointed soon.

Westwood had been appointed by Pulau Pinang in late November 2016. Under the former Bengaluru FC manager this season, the Panthers recorded only one win, two draws and seven defeats in all competitions. They are currently in last place in the league, and earlier this month were knocked out of the FA Cup by division two side Negeri Sembilan.

Furthermore, Westwood had to spend four of those matches in the stands when he was handed a suspension by the Malaysian FA, following an altercation with a match official in Pulau Pinang's league match against Perak at home on January 27.

Despite having achieved fame with Bengaluru for building the club's playing style and training regime, the 40-year old coach was rumoured to face troubles in bringing over his methods to the island side, with the Pulau Pinang players reportedly having a hard time to commit to his demands.
