The Spencer family is opening its beautiful country estate at Althorp to overnight guests for a limited number of weekends to support the charity Whole Child International's latest fundraising campaign.

The Spencers hope to grow the network of benefactors for the charity, of which Countess Spencer is the founder and CEO, by inviting donations in return for the rare opportunity to spend a weekend at Althorp. As well as supporting the charity's Embracing the Future campaign financially, members of the public have the chance to participate in one of the exclusive weekends by submitting an essay or video story about how they have helped others to "embrace their futures".

The magnificent Northamptonshire estate, which is home to the annual Althorp Literary Festival, dates back 500 years and houses a world-class art collection. Guests of Charles and Karen Spencer will be able to take unique tours of the mansion, with some even being invited to stay in the room where Princess Diana grew up.

Speaking to NBC News' Cynthia McFadden, who will present the exclusive story on the channel's On Assignment show this weekend, Earl Spencer said: "I've always thought of this house as contributing. It's not just a little bastion or fortress of privilege."
