Why? Here comes the gross part: bed bugs are on the rise, and to avoid them getting into your clothes and personal belongings, your best to avoid putting your suitcase anywhere near the bed - but instead shove it in the bathroom.

According to a recent study, bed bugs are on the rise in both the UK and internationally, and can be found on almost every surface of a room. Typically they prefer dark crevices where they can hide properly, which is why they're unlikely to be found in the bathroom - hence why you should store your stuff there to begin with.

Is anyone else's skin crawling a bit as they read this?

The Sun say you should be able to see any bugs with your eyes, so by doing a quick search of your hotel room - the mattress, the bed frame and the sofa are the most likely place to find them - you can assure you're in an insect-free zone, and that your luggage is safe and sound.

Of course, hotel rooms are presumably cleaned on a daily basis and totally given the once over when new guests arrive, but still - best to be on the safe side, right?
