A British beach has beaten the Costa del Sol and the picturesque Greek islands to be voted the best beach in Europe.

Rhossili Bay on the Gower Peninsula was the only European beach voted onto a top 10 list in the World.

The hidden gem has now been tipped as better than any beach in Italy, Portugal, Spain and France.

And it was voted in the World’s top 10 along with a string of tropical paradises’ in Panama, Hawaii, Brazil and the Philippines as well as Miami’s iconic South Beach.

The stunning shoreline at Rhossili sits within the first designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ to be given in the UK.

The beautiful beach is also backed with sand dunes and rolling hills and is packed with visitors in the summer.

Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s cabinet member for tourism, said: “Recognition of this nature is nothing new for Rhossili Bay, but it reinforces how lucky we are to have such a world class beach on our doorstep here in Swansea.

“It also shows why we include stunning images and footage of Gower’s coastline so regularly in our outdoor and online advertising campaigns to encourage as many people as possible to visit Swansea Bay.

“Tourism is already worth more than £400 million a year to Swansea’s economy, but recognition of this kind will further raise Swansea Bay’s profile right across the world.

“This will hopefully result in increased awareness, visits, spend and jobs locally. Swansea is also embarking on a significant regeneration programme and raising our profile is essential in helping to attract investment.”

A number of prehistoric remains can be found in the Gower area and at low tide beachgoers can see the remains of shipwrecks - including the wreck of Helvetia.

Walkers who stroll down the three-mile beach to the southern end of the Bay will be met by a small tidal island called Worm’s Head which they can reach when the tide is low.

Rhossili Bay has previously found fame when it appeared in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games and has also featured in TV shows including Doctor Who.
