Bizarre: Childless women let priests walk on them in hope of a baby in Chhattisgarh

In a bizarre ritual, hundreds of married women longing for conception lay down on the ground on Friday to allow priests and witch doctors to walk on their backs to enter a temple in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district, believing this will bless them with a child. Thousands from neighbouring regions throng the temple to participate and witness in ‘Madhai fair’ every year. All this during a pandemic that has killed nearly 2,700 people in the state. Social distancing was crushed in the chaos, and masks tossed aside. Viral videos and photos of the event show not a single person wearing a mask, and people jostling each other for a better view. The ritual is held on the first Friday after Diwali at the temple of Goddess Angaarmoti in Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh, about 90km from Raipur.
