It’s well known that Princess Diana and Prince Charles didn’t have the best relationship before they divorced in the late 80s.

And it looked like the couple even started out on the wrong foot as Diana was left traumatised after he proposed.

So what could be so terrible that Diana was so upset?

Well, it turned out that Diana was haunted by three words that her future husband said.

Like all royal couples, the pair went through an engagement interview and it certainly wasn’t as romantic as William and Kate or Harry and Meghan’s.

And it was during the interview that Charles uttered the words that would leave Diana heartbroken.

During the interview, the couple were asked, ‘Are you in love?’ to which Diana replied, ‘Of course’.

However, Charles wasn’t as romantic as she was, as he responded, ‘Whatever love means.’

Yikes!

It was revealed in a documentary based on the tapes she recorded, that she felt completely heartbroken after that.

In the tapes, she says, ‘That threw me completely, I thought “what a strange answer”. It absolutely traumatised me.’

The documentary based on the tapes, Diana: In Her Own Words, was first released last year and caused quite a lot of controversy.
