Nobody likes breakouts, that much is obvious. But do you know what else we hate with a burning vengeance? Breaking outright after we’ve painstakingly dragged ourselves to the gym for a much overdue workout. It’s almost as if the universe wants us to quit leading a healthy lifestyle and succumb to the siren song of sloth.

We know you’re doing everything right — taking your makeup off before working out, and washing your face right after a good sweat session. You’re also eating well and drinking lots of water, so what could be the treacherous reason behind the breakouts? Turns out, the answer may lie in the laundry detergent and cleanser provided by your gym.

Most gyms and yoga studios provide towel rentals, but there’s no way to know what laundry detergent they use on their towels. Similarly, more often than not, you don’t know what’s in the cleanser provided by the gym in each shower stall. For all you know, these cleansers and detergents are full of comedogenic, inflammation-causing ingredients. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so the next time you head for a workout, be sure to pack your own towel and cleansers. If you happen to forget either of those, your best bet is to skip using the cleansers and towels provided. Give it a try, and see if your skin clears...
