PETALING JAYA: A Hindu association has demanded Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak) issue an apology for insulting the religion after the Umno MP linked the holy ash worn by RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) on his forehead to the ashes of communist leader Chin Peng.

Hindu Sangam Malaysia president RS Mohan Shan said the symbol of their beliefs was not something that should be mocked by anyone, all the more by an MP.

“All religious symbols need to be respected by everyone. Our religious symbols are not for fun,” he told FMT.

Earlier today, Tajuddin was suspended for two days from the Dewan Rakyat after he had repeatedly asked Rayer if he was wearing Chin Peng’s ashes on his forehead.

He continued asking Rayer about this as the Dewan Rakyat debate shifted to the subject of the 12 individuals detained for alleged links to the defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam group.

Rayer then told Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof that it was an insult to the Hindu community.

Mohan said the holy ash, known as vibhuti, was a sacred symbol used by the Hindus, stressing that it was not the ash from burials.

“Politicians, especially, must have the knowledge on the various religions and their basic principles before making comments,” he said.

He said the people elected them as MPs so that they could fulfil their duties to the people and nation, not to make foolish comments.

“His (Tajuddin’s) actions are unacceptable,” he said.
