Umno debate: Perhaps better not to wash private linen in public, says Annuar Musa

PETALING JAYA: The debate between the Umno presidency hopefuls must be thought through wisely, said party information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa (pic).

In a statement on Friday (June 22), Annuar said the party elections are “in-house business” (urusan dalam keluarga), which should follow certain rules, ethics and traditions.

“Generally, having a debate is a good activity as it allows participants to share their views on certain issues.

“Umno, however, is (now) an Opposition party. As far as I remember, there is not a single opposition party that held a ‘public debate’ between their party president candidates,” he said.

He added that he was worried about the "populist trends" and the attempts to follow practices from outside the party.

“(Party elections) are a sensitive matter and it should not be exposed to enemies, or have interference from people outside.

“The message and vision of the candidates must reach those who have yet to reach a decision, and a public debate is not the only way to achieve this goal,” he said.

An open debate between the Government and the Opposition should also be organised 100 days after the Pakatan Harapan coalition has come into power, he suggested.

Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah will be debating Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin in an exchange set to be aired live on Astro Awani on Channel 501 at 9.30pm on June 29.
