KUALA LUMPUR: A volunteer coach for the wheelchair tennis national team was jailed four years for sodomising underage ballboys.

Wheelchair Tennis Malaysia (WTM) president Lenny Ghandi said he was informed by the police that the man had been arrested and sent to jail after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

"That someone could do this was beyond imagination," Ghandi said when contacted by phone.

He said that the coach was arrested at the National Tennis Centre on Jalan Duta on Sept 21, the closing day of the Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games (Para KL2017) wheelchair tennis competition.

The Malaysian Organising Committee had appointed the man as the head ball person for the tournament.

Ghandi said the investigating officer handling the case informed him the next day that the man had been arrested. The man pleaded guilty on Sept 28 and was sentenced to four years' jail.

He clarified that the incident did not involve national athletes and occurred at the coach’s home and not at the competition venue or any official hotels.

He said the man was a volunteer and not a salaried coach with the National Sports Council. His primary duties were as a coach and talent scout.

He said he was unsure who the victims were, as the police were protecting their identities.

He said it was unfortunate that the arrest came right after the historic win for the country at the Asean Para Games.

Malaysia won two golds through Abu Samah Borhan (men’s singles) and Azman Hasan (quad singles) at Para KL2017.

Malaysia bagged two gold, one silver and three bronze to emerge as overall winners of the wheelchair tennis competition.
