Robert Downey, Jr. has signed on to play eccentric animal lover Doctor Dolittle in a new movie.

The Iron Man star has taken the lead in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, which is based on the 1920s children’s books about a veterinarian who can talk to animals.

Eddie Murphy most recently played the role on the big screen and Rex Harrison portrayed Dr. Dolittle in a classic 1967 movie.

Oscar-winning screenwriter Stephen Gaghan will direct the movie from his own script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
