ABOUT 150 participants turned up for the inaugural Sayangi Malaysiaku Walkathon to celebrate the nation’s birthday.

The event was organised by five councillors from the Selayang Municipal Council.

At 7.30am participants were flagged off by Damansara MP Tony Pua at the Kepong Botanical Garden in the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (Frim).

The non-competitive walk saw participants breezing through the 5.2km route surrounded by lush greenery and picturesque spots.

The fun walk attracted participants of all ages with the youngest being a three year old.

The walk ended with Selayang Municipal Council president Suliman Abd Rahman presenting certificates and medals to all participants.

“It is our first time organising such an event and we are happy to see many residents joining us for the fun walk,” said Zone 12 councillor U Chin Ong.

He said it was his first term as a councillor together with Muhammad Najmi Samsudin, P.Mariammah and Tam Kar Lye from DAP, hence the group decided to organise an event to get to know residents in their area better.

They were joined by fourth term councillor Ng Wei Keong. U Chin said the group plans to hold more sporting and festival related events in the future to foster better relationship between residents and councillors.
