Hengyang collision: 'Nine dead and 46 injured' as car deliberately rams into crowd on packed square in China

A video shows dozens of people at the square at the Mishui town panicking as a 4x4 vehicle rams into the crowd.

Video images carried on state media showed several bodies on the ground as bystanders tended to some of them.

An unemployed man, said to be 54-years-old, has been arrested at the scene. He is reported to have a lengthy criminal record.

The square where the crash took place was busy with people due to dancing event being held.

Local media report nine people have been killed and up to 46 injured with a red Land Rover pictured having suffered extensive damage with its hazard lights flashing.

Three of those hurt are suffering serious injuries.

The Beijing Youth Daily quoted witnesses as saying that a red car was driving at high speed and rushed to the crowd dancing in the square.

There was no indication in the government statement or state media reports that the incident was terror related.

Chinese state media says the arrested man is Yang Zanyun who was born in Ganxi Town.

He remains in police custody.
