'Popular' beauty queen killed in Cumbria horror crash along with 18-year-old friend as devastated family pay tribute

Skye Olivia Mitchell's devastated family have paid tribute to the 18-year-old from Millom, Cumbria, and said "she made the world a better place".

Her friend Caitlin Lydia Huddleston, 18, was also killed in the crash on the A595 on Friday night and another 18-year-old girl who was in the back of the car is in a critical condition.

In a statement Skye's family said: "Skye made the world a better place and Skye’s world was a wonderful world to be in.

"Skye will be very sadly missed by her Mam – Sharon Fry, Dad – Ian Mitchell, Step-mam – Margo, sisters- Candice and Millie, her grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, boyfriend –Aidan, and her many, many friends who all loved her dearly.

"They will all miss the daily hugs she gave them."

Her family said Skye excelled at school and was "full of confidence".

They added: "Skye was a popular, kind, caring girl who raised money for various charities. She made the most of her 18 years, embracing every opportunity that came her way."

She was also a huge animal lover, her family said.

The teenager was third in the Junior Miss Great Britain contest before winning the Junior Miss North West title in 2014 and was looking forward to entering the Miss Cumbria competition later this year.

She had recently completed her A-Levels and was looking forward to studying Broadcast Journalism at Salford University’s Media City Campus in September.

Skye was driving a Green Toyota Yaris and Caitlin was in the front passenger seat when they collided with a Ford Transit on Friday.

Another teenager, who has not been named, was in the back seat of the car and is currently in a critical condition.

A 51-year-old man driving the Ford Transit is in hospital in a stable but serious condition.

A Cumbria police spokesman said: "Police can confirm that the two women who died following a road traffic collision on the A595, Bootle, Cumbria, have been formally identified.

"Police were called at 7.55pm on Friday, 14th July, following a two vehicle collision at Bootle, on the A595.

"Skye Olivia Mitchell, 18 years old from Millom, who was driving a Green Toyota Yaris, and her front seat passenger Caitlin Lydia Huddlestone, also 18 years old, from The Green, Millom, were pronounced dead at the scene.

"The back seat passenger, an 18 year old local woman remains in a critical condition in hospital.

"The 51 year old, local, male, driver of the Ford Transit, also remains in hospital, his condition is described as serious but stable.

"Specially trained officers are supporting the families at this time."
