KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia earned a consolation following their failure to qualify for next year’s World Cup by edging Hong Kong 52-46 for third position at the Asian Netball Championship in Singapore.

Sri Lanka secured their fifth Asian title by overcoming Singapore 69-50.

Malaysia, who did not start with top shooter An Najwa Azizan and L. Karishma due to injury, trailed 17-13 and 25-24 in the opening two quarters before sealing victory over Hong Kong.

“We got back to basics, and played a simple game. We managed to overcome all challenges in the opening quarters to bounce back stronger for the win,” said wing attack Pow Mei Foong.

On Saturday, the team, coached by Choo Kon Lee, were denied a World Cup berth following the 51-42 defeat to Singapore in the semi-finals.

“We tried hard against Singapore, but we had injuries during the match, and it affected our tempo,” said Kon Lee.
